De wijn heeft 10 maanden gerijpt op Frans eiken. Het is een volle fruitige krachtige Mencia wijn. Vol, rond en fris van smaak met aroma's van rijp zwart en rood fruit zoals zwarte kersen, bosbes, bramen, rijpe frambozen en aardbeien. Maar ook licht kruidig en een tikje aards met verfijnde tannines. De afdronk is lang en met mooi fruit en wat tonen van vanille agv de houtopvoeding. Deze 100% mencia komt het beste tot zijn recht wanneer deze ietwat koel wordt geserveerd. De Petalos won de 1e plaats op het Prix de Sommelier (winnaar bij de rode wijnen) en de 2019 heeft maar liefst 93+/100 punten gekregen van de Wine Spectator (Parker).
Weetje: Pétalos = bloemblaadjes en MencÃa wordt ook wel de 'Pinot Noir van Spanje' genoemd.
Alle wijnstokken van Descendientes de José Palacios zijn vanaf het begin biologisch en biodynamisch gekweekt. De wijnen zijn vanaf het oogstjaar 2020 biologisch gecertificeerd zijn. De druiven voor Petalós zijn afkomstig uit verschillende dorpen uit de Bierzo, voornamelijk Corullón en Villafranca del Bierzo. Het totale wijngaardareaal beslaat 90 hectare. In Corullón bestaat de bodem voornamelijk uit leisteen met hier en daar kwartsieten en zandsteen gemengd met klei. De andere dorpen hebben een bodem van klei met kwartsieten en kiezels. Alle wijngaarden worden biologisch bewerkt. Ze liggen op steile hellingen op een hoogte tussen 450 meter en 1.100 meter. Petalós bestaat voor 92% uit mencÃa, het belangrijkste druivenras van Bierzo. De overige 8% is een mix van lokale blauwe druivenrassen alicante bouschet, gran negro, pan y carne, negreda plus drie witte druivenrassen, valenciana, jerez, godello. De leeftijd van de wijnstokken ligt tussen de 40 en 90 jaar oud. Na de handmatige oogst worden de druiven gedeeltelijk ontsteeld en gekneusd. De alcoholische gisting vindt spontaan plaats in een combinatie van RVS en houten vaten. Daarna rijpt de wijn nog zo'n 10 maanden op hout. De wijn wordt geklaard en ongefilterd gebotteld.

The regional red 2020 Pétalos comes from 90 hectares of vineyards, mainly from Corullón and Villafranca del Bierzo and the districts of Viariz, Hornija, Valtuille de Abajo and Otero. It mixes expositions, altitudes and soils and wants to paint a picture of Bierzo in the warm 2020 vintage. They reckon it's 92% MencÃa with 5% other red grapes (Alicante Bouschet, Gran Negro, Pan y Carne and Negreda) and 3% whites (Valenciana, Jerez and Godello) with an average yield of 26 hectoliters per hectare. The grapes were picked from August 28th to September 24th and fermented partly destemmed in stainless steel and oak vats with indigenous yeasts for 43 days with a slow malolactic fermentation that lasted two months. The wine matured in barrel for around eight months (malolactic was fast, and the wines were put in barrel early) and was bottled unclarified, unfiltered and non-stabilized with cold. It has good ripeness with 14% alcohol (their upper limit) and moderate acidity at 4.6 grams (of tartaric acid). It's a little more fruit-driven, a vintage of sun, jovial and juicy, approachable and round with very fine, slightly powdery tannins. The fruit is darker than in the 2019. This is still young, and, as it happens with even the most approachable wines from the region, it should be even better in a couple of years. I tasted it again in mid-December, and the wine is showing better and better; time in bottle has done it some good, and the wine has settled and is getting more balanced. I don't feel the sun now; it's harmonious and more serious, juicy and tasty. A little better than anticipated. They had 1,050 barrels that produced 263,000 bottles and 1,500 magnums. It was bottled in May 2021.
They are bottling the wines from Bierzo earlier than ever, so I already tasted the 2020s in bottle for the region's article at the end of January 2022. I include those notes here for the completeness of the article, but now I only tasted the unbottled 2021s, from a very different year, which, according to Ricardo Pérez Palacios, was the most challenging year so far, a year when MencÃa wouldn't ripen! I had already tasted some of those 2021s before, and back then, even if the wines were going through full malolactic, the Moncerbal already shone and felt to be among the finest vintages for this paraje.
2021 was an atypical year, cooler but with a warm and dry end of the season. They harvested some grapes at the end of August and then they had to stop ... because the grapes wouldn't ripen! So, Pétalos is only 13.5% alcohol. Some wines have a reductive character; it was a cooler and dry year, and the wines showed that character, continental and cold, despite the heat in July and August. The wines are juicy and aromatic, a lot fresher than they anticipated. The wines have contained alcohol (all around 13.5%) and a narrower profile. It should be a long-lived vintage, perhaps not as juicy as the 2018s, but with very good balance and freshness.
