Bodegas Canopy is a project started in 2004 by the two oenologists Alfonso Chacón Gil and Belarmino Fernández Bombín, who have gained experience with various wine producers in the previous years. Their ambition was to make authentic wines in one of the most unknown regions of Spain, the DO Méntrida, which is located north of Toledo and south of Madrid in Castile - La Mancha. They bought two ancient garnache vineyards here (the average age is 60 years) in the Sierra de San Vicente, 750 meters above sea level. The mountain range is known for its unique terroir, which is made of granite and covered with pebbles. Due to the warm days and cool nights, the climatic conditions are almost ideal for grape cultivation. As usual with many young Spanish winemakers, Alfonso and Belarmino invested in state-of-the-art cellar technology and brand new barriques. They decided to use only 500 liter barrels of French oak so that the character of the garnache grape is not drowned out by wood.

What both of these passionate winemakers produce is remarkable. 'Kaos' 'Congo', La Viña Escondida, 'Loco', 'Tres Patas' 'Malpaso' and the new 'Castillo de Berlarfonso' are characteristic wines. In the more than 10 years of their existence, the Bodega has already received much appreciation. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and the Guía Peñín, the two main sources for assessing Spanish wines in particular, are praising reviews. "Hey, it is great to see two Mentrida growers giving the region such a good name. Their wines come highly recommended: natural, full of character and charm, Mentrida wines you want to contemplate and savor." Said an enthusiastic Neil Martin van the Wine Advocate.
