Description
Pujanza belongs to the modern style of Rioja and also has the great advantage that the vineyards are located at a high altitude (the Pujanza Norte comes from one of the highest vineyards in the Rioja). This gives the wine the typical Rioja character, but with a lot of elegance and freshness.
The Finca Valdepoleo is a wine that comes from 1 vineyard. Owner Carlos San Pedro believes this is the vineyard with the most potential. The vineyard was planted in 1973 with Tempranillo at an altitude of 630 meters. The Valdepoleo is fermented in small stainless steel barrels after which the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 14 months. In the glass, the Valdepoleo has a dark ruby red color with a very attractive and suggestive nose with fresh and warm aroma; mainly of red berries with subtle notes of black fruit, memories of fragrant blossom and spices. Fresh and complex. In the mouth the wine is delicate and elegant. It is a harmonious, complex wine with body and backbone, polished tannins and no sharp edges. Very balanced. The Pujanza Finca Valdepoleo is a beautiful, modern Rioja.

Carlos San Pedro is the owner of Bodegas Pujanza, who has an almost manic approach to producing wines of the highest level. Carlos' original idea was to produce a single vineyard with Pujanza from Laguardia - the capital of the Rioja. But gradually it became clear that the terroirs of the vineyards are unique and different so he changed his mind and decided to blend the uniqueness of the terroirs into some of his wines. The Valdepoleo is the first wine that is completely single vineyard and it is expected that more wines will follow in the future. Carlos does not use external yeasts, and he consciously chooses to keep the amount of new wood low, but also to age the wines for longer in large (used) barriques. Bodegas Pujanza has approximately 30 hectares of vineyards, all of which are close to beautiful Bodega. The vineyards are all between 600 (Cisma) and 720 meters (Norte) altitude.

2019 was a warm and dry year that delivered ripe and heady wines, like the 2019 Finca Valdepoleo, which has 15.52% alcohol, a pH of 3.57 and 5.85 grams of acidity. The vines were planted in 1973 at 630 meters in altitude on clay and limestone soils from Laguardia. I found very ripe notes in the nose of this Valdeopoleo, with dark berries and an earthy touch. It's very tannic and powerful, concentrated and ripe. It needs time and/or powerful food. It's a riper style, more for the fans of the style, which I found close to being excessive. He used some new oak here trying to compensate the concentration and power of the wine, which made it even harder. 60,000 bottles produced.
Pujanza is one of the leading names in modern Rioja. It was created by Carlos San Pedro in Laguardia where he owns 40 hectares of vineyards and produces some 200,000 bottles. I tasted mostly 2019s, a very warm and ripe year with very high ripeness and all the wines (except the Hado) are above 15% alcohol, because he saw green notes in the grapes and waited for the ripening of the grapes but the alcohol was quite high. But the wines are not overripe; it's a ripe but compensated year. 2020 is cooler and the wines are fresher and have more contained alcohol, but both years are low yielding, for different reasons, but both with moderate crops.

Tangy dried herbs on top of the mixture of red and black fruit, together with hints of hot stones, tar and oyster sauce. A medium-to full-bodied Rioja with juicy plums and cherries, sealed with powerful yet silky tannins. Drink or hold.

Bright violet. Expressive aromas of fresh black raspberry and cherry are complicated by hints of potpourri, licorice and smoky oak spices. Bright and energetic on the palate, offering sharply focused and appealingly sweet red and blue fruit flavors that become spicier with aeration. In a vibrant and elegant style, finishing with excellent clarity and an echo of juicy red fruits. Aged for 14 months in new and used French oak.
