What is a magnum bottle of wine?

A magnum wine bottle contains 1.5 liters – exactly twice the size of a standard 0.75-liter bottle. The word “magnum” comes from Latin and literally means “large”. In the wine world, this bottle size symbolizes luxury, quality, and aging potential. Magnum bottles have existed for centuries and became especially popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, when wineries in Bordeaux and Champagne used these larger formats to showcase their top wines. Not only did such a bottle make a striking impression at the table, but people also discovered that wine often matures more beautifully in a magnum than in smaller bottles. To this day, many renowned wineries release their best vintages and cuvées in magnum format – often in limited editions.

Why choose a magnum bottle?

A magnum bottle holds 1.5 liters of wine and is more than just a showpiece on the table. This double-sized standard bottle not only offers an impressive presentation but also allows the wine to age more gracefully.  A magnum bottle matures differently than a standard wine bottle because the ratio between oxygen and wine is more favourable: there is relatively less oxygen in the bottle compared to the larger amount of wine. This ensures a slower and more even maturation process. The wine develops more subtly as a result, retains its freshness and complexity for longer, and often achieves a more refined flavour profile. This slower evolution is particularly effective in wines for laying down, such as red Bordeaux or vintage Champagne.

Magnum bottles are loved by collectors, sommeliers, and connoisseurs. And for good reason:

    1. Better aging: Thanks to the larger volume, wine matures more slowly and often more complexly.
  1. Perfect for parties and dinners: One magnum equals 10 to 12 glasses – ideal for larger gatherings.
  2. Longer shelf life: Slower oxidation allows magnum bottles to stay drinkable for longer.
  3. Exclusivity: Many top estates only bottle their best vintages in magnum format.
