Ideaal gelegen ten noordwesten van Saint-Emilion, aan de rand van de Pomerol appellatie liggen de 29 hectare van Château La Dominique, eigendom van de Fayat familie sinds 1969, onderscheiden zich door een opmerkelijk terroir, waarvan de uitstekende percelen grenzen aan de beroemdste wijngaarden van de regio - Cheval Blanc, Figeac, La Conseillante, L'Evangile.
De Château La Dominique Saint-Émilion Grand Cru (Grand Cru Classé) 2022 is een eyeopener. De wijn is een blend van 88% Merlot - 11% Cabernet Franc en 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. De druiven worden met de hand geoogst in kleine kratten en gevinifieerd in temperatuurgecontroleerde kegelvormige vaten. De wijn rijpt 14 maanden in vaten (50% nieuw, 40% gebruikt) en 10% in eieren, amforen of in globes.
Proefnotitie: Rood fruit, granaatappel, kaneel, menthol en rozenblaadjes openen zich allemaal moeiteloos, maar het is de pure textuurresonantie van de wijn die de grootste indruk maakt.

A rich, heady wine, the 2022 La Dominique offers up aromas of sweet cherries, baked berries and plum liqueur mingled with notions of licorice and melted asphalt. Medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with a rich core of sweet, somewhat jammy fruit but reasonably lively underlying acids, it's framed by plenty of powdery tannin. I had entertained higher hopes for La Dominique this year, but perhaps the pace of ripening was just too rapid for the estate's technical team.

Lovely fruit here with black berry, redcurrants and tile aromas and flavors. Medium- to full-bodied, very well integrated tannins and a lightly chewy finish, showing the potential of the vintage.

From: Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)
The 2020 La Dominique is every bit as impressive as it was from barrel. Dark and sumptuous in the glass, the 2020 is racy and wonderfully sleek right out of the gate. Dark cherry, gravel, spice, dried flowers and espresso lend shades of darkness to this deep, wonderfully plush La Dominique. Superb.

From: 2020 Bordeaux En Primeur: Almost Back to Normal (Jun 2021)
The 2020 La Dominique is eye-opening. Warm, dry summer weather caused natural dehydration on the vine, which in turn yielded a Dominique of unusual depth and concentration. Yields were 38 hectoliters per hectare, as opposed to 50 in 2019 and 46 in 2018, which seems to work so well in giving the 2020 an extra bit of everything. Even with all its richness, the 2020 remains bright and full of energy. Red-toned fruit, pomegranate, cinnamon, menthol and rose petal all open effortlessly, but it is the wine’s sheer textural resonance that impresses most. Tasted next to the 2018 and 2019, the 2020 is quite simply on another level. Harvest started on September 10 for the Merlot and wrapped up in the 30th with the Cabernets. The blend is 85% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Élevage is expected to be 14 months, mostly in French oak (50% new), with about 10% of the wine aged in amphora. I can’t wait to taste the 2020 from bottle. It is a superb effort from the team led by General Manager Gwendeline Lucas and Technical Director Yann Monties.
