De combinatie van de druiven zorgt voor een geweldige wijn: de Merlot brengt rondheid en zachtheid in de mond, de Cabernet Franc van de oudste wijnstokken biedt gulzigheid, de Cabernet Sauvignon biedt finesse en elegantie die nodig is om de stijl van het Château du Tertre weer te geven. The 2022 du Tertre unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums, licorice, vine smoke and petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and layered palate of uncommon depth and concentration that nevertheless retains all the estate's signature elegance. Polished and supple, it's a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 15% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, which more or less represents this estate's varietal breakdown after its extensive replanting program is complete. This looks likely to emerge as the finest du Tertre in several decades, and it is sure to be one of the better values of the en primeur campaign.

The 2021 Château du Tertre was picked from September 28 until October 12 and aged in 50% new oak. It is quite bold on the nose, offering expressive blackberry, mint and cedar scents, almost Pauillac-like in style. Affording it a few minutes in the glass, it seems to gather momentum. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, concentrated black fruit, a little graphite toward the finish courtesy of the Cabernet Sauvignon, and quite a spicy aftertaste. This is a commendable 2021 that should age with style.

Giscours and his Italian property Montescudaio in Tuscany. The buyer was a French insurance company, but the estate is managed by Les Grands Chais de France. I tasted the 2021s with technical director Romain Beurienne and Cynthia Capelaere, as well as conducting a vertical that will appear in the future. Beurienne explained: “It was a difficult vintage because the beginning of spring was very cool with little rain, but during May and June it was wet with tropical temperatures. In June, we had 168mm of rain and a median temperature around 20°C, so there was great mildew pressure. We managed to fight the mildew with a lot of spray, using one chemical spray in the biodynamic part of the vineyard. There was no choice. It was hard work for the vineyard team. It was difficult to find a dry window. There were a lot of cloudy days in the summer; it was not sunny, which retarded growth of the vine in July and August. But September was good with a big diurnal temperature variation, cool and night with hot days, which helped the maturation of bunches. Without this month, it would have been a very average vintage. On the first weekend of October, they predicted 60mm of rain in Arsac, and we feared a large loss due to botrytis, so it was a hard decision to harvest later and wait for maturity. In one week, we gained a degree of potential alcohol and the phenolic ripeness changed completely. One parcel of Cabernet Franc was picked twice, a week apart, and the wines are totally different, richer and more concentrated.”

The 2020 du Tertre is bold and punchy, with an enticing mix of inky dark fruit and more savory, earthy tones. All the elements are so nicely integrated. The tannins are a bit burly, as is often the case, and yet the 2020 appears to have enough fruit to provide at least some balance. Scorched earth, licorice, tobacco and game linger on the potent finish.

A big, raw, exuberant, incredibly promising barrel sample, the 2022 Château Du Tertre reveals a vivid purple hue as well as full-bodied aromas and flavors of crème de cassis, spring flowers, and graphite. A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot, this terrific Margaux has fine tannins, beautiful balance, and a great finish. The cellar will be your friend here.

Château du Tertre is gelegen in het Franse plaatsje Arsac, welke deel uitmaakt van het departement Gironde. Château du Tertre ligt in het hoogste deel van de wijngemeente Margaux met de meest veredelde gravel aardlagen van de Médoc. De wijnstokken hullen zich in het licht en de zon en beschermen ze tegen de late vorst in het voorjaar. Een damp zorgt voor natuurlijke drainage, scheidt de 2 gravel aardlagen en koelt de wijnstokken. Hierdoor wordt de temperatuur van de wijnstokken lager wat vitaal is voor de ontwikkeling en hen beschermd voor zowel overtollig water en droogte. Cabernet Sauvignon is de belangrijkste druivensoort van dit wijnhuis. Verder wordt er gewerkt met de soorten Merlot, Cabernet Franc en Petit Verdot.
Het Château du Tertre is een landgoed van ongeveer 1000 jaar oud. De bijbehorende wijngaard strekt zich uit over 52 hectare, en is sinds 1855 onveranderd gebleven. Tijdens de 19e eeuw, kreeg Château du Tertre wereldwijde bekendheid vooral dankzij de classificatie uit 1855 waarbij aan het châteu de Margaux Grand Cru Klasse werd toegekend. In 1997, kocht de Nederlandse zakenman Eric Albada Jelgersma het landgoed en werd er geïnvesteerd in een grootschalige algehele herstructurering, waarbij de vroegere nobele persoonlijkheid werd teruggegeven aan het Château du Tertre. De wijnen van Château du Tertre reflecteren dan ook de ziel van die prachtige terroir.
