Dit is één van de absolute topwijnen uit Montalcino van het domein Tenuta Il Poggione. De druiven voor deze Brunello komen uit de allerbeste wijngaarden van Tenuta Il Poggione van wijnstokken die 25 - 40 jaar oud zijn. Il Poggione maakt zijn Brunello enkel in de grote wijnjaren.
De Sangiovese Grosso druiven komen van de oudste wijngaarden. De wijngaarden liggen op een hoogte tussen de 150 en 450 meter. De druiven worden met de hand geplukt. Na de pluk worden de druiven zacht geperst. Het vergistingsproces geschiedt in grote stalen vaten bij een gecontroleerde temperatuur van 25/28 ° C. De brunello van Il Poggione ondergaat een rijping in Frans eiken vaten van 30 en 50 hl voor een periode van 36 maanden. Daarna rijpt de wijn minimaal 12 maanden op de fles. De Brunello di Montalcino is een opvallende wijn die de puurheid van Sangiovese toont. Geen van deze elementen overheerst de ander. Een hoogtepunt waar je nog 20 jaar van kunt genieten.
In het glas heeft de Il Poggione een robijnrode kleur met intense geuren in de neus met vooral veel rood rijp fruit kersen, kruiden, zoethout, gerookt vlees, rozen en gegrild vlees in de neus. In de mond heeft de Brunello een strak en helder mondgevoel met fruit intensiteit vol, krachtig, complex, fluweelzacht en met een lang aanhoudende afdronk. In zijn jonge jaren decanteren.

The Il Poggione 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows an evolved bouquet with aromas of dried fruit, forest floor, crushed flower and autumnal leaf. On a second nose, you get dark licorice, wet slate, cola and grilled rosemary. The tannins are powdery and dry. I recommend a medium-term drinking window as a result. You do feel the powerful 15% alcohol content in this ample 200,000-bottle release.
Il Poggione is one of the headline estates in the vicinity of the picturesque hamlet of Sant'Angelo in Colle. It farms vineyards over a wide span of 150 to 450 meters above sea level. The vines are between 25 and 59 years old.

Lots of dried fruit, such as figs and dried cherries, followed by tree bark, rosemary and a hint of sandalwood. Full-bodied, creamy palate with a solid tannin texture. Wonderful length. Dense and opulent. Better after 2029.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino pulls the taster close to the glass with its dark and earthy blend of crushed ashen stones, giving way to rosemary, cedar, exotic spice and a core of raspberry preserves. Enveloping and serene, this flows across the palate like pure silk, steadily building in tension as tart wild berries and orange hints give way to a sweet herbal thrust. The 2019 finishes with tremendous length and is classically structured, as crunchy tannins resonate and violet inner florals slowly fade over a tactile coating of minerality. Il Poggione has captured the radiance of the vintage, yet this is just a baby today.

Alessandro Bindocci of Il Poggione compares the weather conditions of 2019 to 2016. However, when tasting the two vintages, I found them markedly different. While both come across as quite classic, there is more energy and fruit to be found in the 2019 versus the 2016 at the same stage. As for the 2016 Brunello, it’s coming along beautifully. I had the opportunity to revisit it on this last trip in the company of some pretty heavy hitters, where it reigned supreme. Except for 2016 and 2019, the previous eight years were characterized by warm and dry conditions. As a result, Il Poggione has begun to prioritize irrigation for emergency uses (which is becoming a necessity in the southwest of Montalcino) and is looking to their higher-elevation vineyards to find more balance. It bears mentioning that despite its location in one of the warmest and driest parts of the region, Il Poggione remains one of the absolute top producers of Brunello from year to year at a remarkably fair price point.

Tenuta Il Poggione is de grande dame van de brunello. De oorsprong gaat terug tot het jaar 1630. Een belangrijke mijlpaal uit de recente geschiedenis vormt het jaar 1890, toen de Florentijnse familie Franceschi het wijngoed in S. Angelo in Colle in het zuiden van Montalcino overnam.
Tegenwoordig is het Italiaanse wijngoed in handen van Leopoldo en Livia Franceschi, die over een wijngaard van 125 hectare beschikken. Dankzij het grote oppervlak kan de familie elk jaar opnieuw wijnen op een constant hoog niveau produceren. Met de ligging profiteert het wijngoed van het klimaat rondom de Amiata berg en de Tyrrhenische zee en liggen op een hoogte van 150 tot 450 meter boven zeeniveau. Doordat de variatie in hoogte van de wijngaarden, is het gemakkelijker de druiven allemaal op het juiste moment te oogsten en wijnen te produceren die lang kunnen blijven liggen. Paradepaardjes zijn de 'Vigna Paganelli' Brunello di Montalcino Riserva van een in 1964 aangelegd afzonderlijk perceel, die uitsluitend in de beste jaren wordt gebotteld, en vanzelfsprekend de ‘normale’ brunello. In 2004 werd een zeer moderne wijnkelder in gebruik genomen. De wijn kan hier op vijf meter diepte in eikenhouten vaten bij een optimale temperatuur rijpen. Aan het hoofd van het wijngoed staat Fabrizio Bindocci, die tot ver over de grenzen van Montalcino als specialist bekend staat.
