De 2019 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape "XXL" is een uitzonderlijke wijn uit de zuidelijke Rhône-vallei, geproduceerd door het gerenommeerde Domaine de la Janasse. Deze cuvée wordt slechts in uitzonderlijke jaren gemaakt; 2019 is pas de derde keer, na 2007 en 2016, dat deze wijn is uitgebracht. Deze wijn bestaat voor 65% uit Grenache, aangevuld met Syrah en andere druivensoorten. Slechts 30% van de druiven is ontsteeld, en de rijping vindt volledig plaats in demi-muids (600-liter vaten). De 2019 "XXL" biedt een elegant en puur profiel met aroma's van rijp rood en zwart fruit, herbes de Provence, gemalen peper en viooltjes. Ondanks zijn kracht en weelderigheid behoudt de wijn een perfecte balans, met een frisse smaak, zijdezachte maar stevige tannines en een indrukwekkende afdronk. Van deze jaargang zijn slechts ongeveer 300 kisten geproduceerd, wat de wijn zeer zeldzaam maakt. Het wordt aanbevolen om de wijn 4 tot 5 jaar te laten rijpen; bij goede opslag kan hij tot 30 jaar verder evolueren.
Wijncriticus Jeb Dunnuck heeft de 2019 "XXL" beoordeeld met een perfecte score van 100 punten, en noemt het "pure magie" en "een van de meest unieke wijnen die er zijn"

Only the second vintage of this cuvée ever to be produced (the other is 2007), the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape XXL is about 75% Grenache, with the rest a mix of permitted varieties. It incorporates "a lot" of whole clusters and matured in demi-muid. It was bottled in May but will likely only be released in November, says Christophe Sabon. Classy aromas of crushed stone, pencil shavings and baking spices start it off on a terrific note, while ripe raspberries and stone fruit unfold on the full-bodied palate. Contrary to the implications of its name, this wine boasts incredible finesse, elegance and length and is in fact more impressive for those qualities than its overall size, power and richness. It will certainly open a few eyes.
Although I showed up considerably late for my appointment with the brother-sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon, Christophe wore his customary, irrepressible smile. The French soccer team was ahead in their World Cup match, and he was showing off the domaine's stellar 2016s. "It's my father's 50th harvest," he said. "And he thinks it's the best. It's incredible because you have power, finesse and acidity." Interestingly, the Sabons are planting Grenache Gris and Clairette Rose for possible inclusion in red wines, which Christophe said he hopes will add some freshness to Grenache. Worth noting is that the family also owns Clos St Antonin (tasted on this visit but written up under its own heading).

Another insanely good wine that’s a legend in the making is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape XXL, which is almost all Grenache (there’s a splash of Mourvèdre) that spent three years in foudre and barrels before being bottled. Offering a port-like bouquet of blackberry jam, beef blood, black licorice and roasted herbs, it hits the palate with an incredible amount of fruit and texture yet always stays balanced, fresh and lively, with a finish that just won’t quit. This decadent, heady, layered and just about over the top beauty won’t be for everyone (and I’ve had bottles state side that showed more stewed and evolved characteristics), but it’s a singular, heavenly bottle of wine.

After the inaugural 2007 vintage and the follow-up 2016, 2019 is only the third year when Domaine de la Janasse bottled the Châteauneuf-du-Pape XXL. It is predominately made from old-vines Grenache along with small amounts of Mourvèdre and other permitted varieties. While the Grenache has aged for two years in foudre, the Mourvèdre was briefly aged in French oak barriques with a small proportion of new oak. Medium ruby-colored, it wafts from the glass with pungent aromas of jammy red and black fruits, licorice, garrigue, cured meat, cloves and a pinch of bourbon vanilla. Full-bodied, massively concentrated and muscular, it wears its enormous power with style, like a bodybuilder in a taylor-made suit. Only 3,000 bottles produced.

Domaine de la Janasse is located opposite Châteauneuf-du-Pape at the entrance to the village of Courthézon. Despite their proven ability to age, these wines are usually quite approachable in their youth, offering great value for money. Next to the 2021 releases, proprietor Isabelle Sabon opened wines from the 2020 and 2019 vintage, and I was pleased to see a homogenous quality level across all years. One of their promising side projects includes the wines of Domaine Saint Antonin, nowadays simply called Clos St Antonin, a Grenache-only Châteauneuf-du-Pape from old vines with an average age of 70 years.

Domaine de la Janasse stamt uit 1967 toen het werd opgericht door Aimé Sabon met 15 ha wijngaard. Inmiddels bestaat de totale oppervlakte 55 ha en wordt momenteel gerund door zoon Christophe en zijn zus Isabelle. Hij is een erg succesvol wijnmaker! Christophe bewerkt in totaal meer dan 15 hectaren wijngaarden. De variëteit aan verschillende druiven is zeer groot, o.a. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Marsanne, Roussanne, Carignan, Bourboulenc, Counoise. Alle wijnen worden klassiek gemaakt en munten uit door de combinatie van kracht en finesse. De wijngaarden bevinden zich op een moeilijke ondergrond van kiezel, zand en grote keien. De wijnstokken zijn 40 tot 90 jaar oud. Het rendement is meestal minder dan 30 hl/ha door streng te snoeien en een rigoreuze vendange verte. Christophe werkt bovendien bijna uitsluitend organisch. De grote doorbraak van Janasse kwam in 2007, toen hun Châteauneuf du Pape "Veilles Vignes" 100 punten Parker scoorde!! Jaar in jaar uit scoren al hun wijnen uitstekend. De kwaliteit van dit domaine is zo groot dat zelfs hun "gewone "Côtes-du-Rhône" wereldwijd al een hoog aanzien heeft!
