Château Margaux is een van de beroemdste wijnhuizen ter wereld. Het is gelegen in Bordeaux nabij de stad Margaux. Château Margaux is geclassificeerd als Premier Grand Cru Classé volgens het Bordeaux-wijnclassificatiesysteem van 1855. Het landgoed omvat 82 hectare voor rode wijn en 12 hectare voor witte wijn. Op deze 94 hectare wordt 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot en 1% Cabernet Franc verbouwd. Voor de witte wijn is 12 hectare Sauvignon blanc aangeplant. De tweede wijn van het wijnhuis heet Pavillon rouge. De witte wijn "Pavillon Blanc" wordt beschouwd als de beste witte wijn van de Médoc. Sinds 2009 produceert Château Margaux ook een derde wijn genaamd "Margaux du Château Margaux". Deze derde wijn wordt gemaakt sinds 1997, maar werd tot 2009 altijd in bulk verkocht aan andere wijnproducenten. Als een van de grootste en bekendste producenten in de Margaux produceert Chateau Margaux gemiddeld 25.000 kisten van hun Grand vin .
De witte wijn van dit geweldig wijnhuis is gemaakt van 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Een vrij lichte maar fijne vintage Pavillon Blanc. Het opent langzaam met geuren van verse ananas, lindebloesem, sinaasappelschil en citroencurd met hints van yuzuzest, natte kiezels, vuursteen en kumquat. Medium-bodied, het palet zingt werkelijk van levendige citrusvruchten en minerale accenten, met een zeer levendige frisheid, eindigend met grote lengte en fluisterend over enorm veel rijpingspotentieel.
Het warmste jaar sinds het begin van de 20e eeuw; de temperaturen in 2018 lagen 3,24°F boven het nationale gemiddelde. In Margaux begon het jaar met een relatief milde winter met temperaturen onder het normale niveau en af en toe vorst in februari, die geen invloed had op onze wijnstokken. De rest van het jaar was heet, soms erg heet, vergeleken met seizoensgemiddelden, gekenmerkt door recordtemperaturen in de laatste tien dagen van juni en de eerste tien dagen van augustus, ruim 7,2 ° F boven het 30-jarig gemiddelde.

As mentioned during my barrel tasting of this wine, the 2018 Pavillon Blanc is made of 100% Sauvignon Blanc that was picked at the end of August. The vines here are 40-50 years old, going some way to helping them cope with periods of extreme heat and drought, as was the case in 2018. The nose begins a little reticent, requiring a fair bit of swirling to unlock youthful, pristine notes of freshly squeezed limes, lemon tart and fresh grapefruit with touches of sea spray, green mango and acacia with a waft of crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate delivers a seriously racy backbone of acidity, supporting the super intense citrus and chalky flavors layers, finishing long with great purity. It will require a good 4-5 years in bottle to emerge from this shell and should drink for a good 15 years or more beyond that.
“I think September made the vintage,” Managing Director Philippe Bascaules told me. “But we had to take time. Time is important for full ripeness of tannins. We started the Merlot harvest September 17 and finished on September 24. Then we waited until October 4th to begin harvesting the Cabernet. We have a lot of tannin this year. The extraction was huge in the early days. The very small berries made the extraction so easy. So, we changed the winemaking a little bit. Made it softer. We followed the maceration every day.”
The grand vin this year is off the charts incredible. Exotic, flamboyant, totally decadent—but what I particularly love is a freshness and brightness that comes not just from acidity (in fact, the acid is relatively low this year) but from bright red fruit and floral sparks in the wine that provide a seamlessness. Potentially perfect—bravo!

The 2018 Pavillon Blanc is rich and beautifully layered, with a striking interplay of aromas, flavors and textures. Citrus peel, white flowers and orchard fruit give the 2018 lovely resonance from start to finish. Harvest was about a week earlier than normal, which is to say between August 27-31, before dehydration in the field became an issue. The 2018 captures the natural radiance of the year while retaining terrific freshness as well. In a word: sublime.

"We try to work as sustainably as possible," explained Managing Director Philippe Bascaules at Château Margaux. We started with natural copper and sulfur treatments. Disease pressure was extremely high in early July. Our owner, Corinne Mentzelopoulos, told us she was not prepared to lose half the harvest, so we intervened with synthetic products, and that ultimately saved our crop. Yields are still down about 30%, which is to say 30 hectoliters per hectare as opposed to the 40-45 we prefer to see." Readers will get a good sense of the style of the year by tasting the Pavillon Rouge, which is quite a bit richer and racier than it usually is. The Grand Vin carries plenty of intensity, but it does so with the inimitable style that makes Château Margaux so unique.
