Omschrijving
Growing Season
“A maturing of the human element”
Pruning began in late January and was finished by early March. We chose to prune conservatively, leaving fewer buds per vine than the previous year. The growing season commenced with budbreak in the first week of April.
It is important to note that, although rainfall was slightly below average, the timing of the rain was decidedly opportune. We received nearly half of the total year’s rainfall in March, April, and May, which helped the vines grow at their potential throughout the spring. The vines bloomed with great optimism and our pruning strategy paid off with a good balance of fruit.
What followed was one of the most temperate and idyllic growing seasons in recent memory. Temperatures in Oakville rarely surpassed 90°F (32°C), and not once did they trespass upon the century mark. As we entered autumn, the forecast predicted moderate temperatures with morning fog and no chance of rain. Customarily, these types of conditions could result in delaying the onset of harvest. As we tasted the grapes in September, however, there was an indescribable confidence that the vines were ready to be harvested, and the in-gathering proceeded purposefully from that point on.
Harlan Estate winemaker’s tasting notes
The aromas are decidedly young and vibrant, yet the ubiquitous forest floor elements––normally veiled––are illuminated in vivid detail. There is an innate grace as the wine follows the natural contours of the palate like the slopes upon which the vines reside.
Deep and layered, there is resilient energy and strength present. In the finish, more refined details emerge around its confident structure. The tannins have a delicate, engraved quality, each facet demonstrating a fine filigree of tannins in layered sequence. The 2018 is almost celebratory. It speaks of a certain harmony of nature and the unbroken chain of those who have tended to this place over time.

The 2012 Harlan Estate is reminiscent of their 2002. Probably a candidate for perfection with another 4-5 years of bottle age, the wine is inky plum/purple to the rim and offers a gorgeous nose of scorched earth, blackberry and cassis, forest floor, and a floral, lavender-like component followed by deep, opulent, majestic flavors that caress the palate with high but sweet tannin. This is relatively evolved, and supple and voluptuous for a young Harlan estate – hence the comparison with their compelling 2002. This wine can be drunk in several years and is likely another candidate for 30-50 years of cellaring.
Harlan’s 2013 blends had not been finalized at the time of my visit so they were not tasted.
The Maiden is made up of the lighter, softer, more evolved lots culled from the Harlan Estate wine. The Harlan Estate is virtually all Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Merlot and Petit Verdot, but interestingly, very little or possibly no Cabernet Franc, which is surprising in view of its neighbor Futo Estate, which is just down the hillside and does such a magnificent job with Cabernet Franc in their blends. As a postscript, I recently tasted the first Harlan Estate wines, which were never released, as Bill Harlan wanted to set the market on fire with a truly great wine. Looking back on the 1987, 1988 and 1989, the 1987 was tired, but the other two vintages were certainly upper 80-point wines, although nowhere near the quality of his first release, the 1990, or the subsequent great wines that started with the 1991. And speaking of the 1991, I just had two bottles of it at two separate tastings from my cellar, and that wine, at age 24, is still incredibly vigorous, vibrant and majestic. So my aging curves of 30-50 years for recent great vintages are completely understandable, given the fact that the 1991 still has at least another 20 years of life left in it. www.harlanestate.com

Drinking Window 2018 - 2037
From: New Releases from Napa Valley: 2012 and 2013 (Dec 2014)
Vivid and captivating from the very first taste, the 2012 Harlan Estate is insanely beautiful. Mocha, espresso, savory herbs and spices emerge from the breathtaking, intensely aromatic bouquet in a stunningly beautiful delineated wine that represents the height of total finesse. The silky, layered finish is a thing of beauty, even with all of its richness, the 2012 is never heavy. That is partly the vintage, but also the result of a gradual but at the same time clear evolution towards more finesse and less brute power.
- By Antonio Galloni on October 2014
Harlan Estate fans have a number of fabulous wines to look forward to. The 2011s offer tons of near and medium-term appeal, while the 2012s are more typical of the house style and are also likely to offer wide windows of pure pleasure. As always, Harlan Estate blends and bottles later than most Napa Valley estates, so I was not able to taste the 2013s. According to the winemaking team of Bob Levy and Cory Empting the key to 2011 was dropping a significant amount of crop, which was the only way to achieve reasonable levels of ripeness given the cool, rainy conditions that characterized most of the growing season. The 2011s at Harlan Estate are standouts; that much is obvious. The 2012s are a perfect example of the gradual evolution that has taken place at Harlan Estate. A decade ago, these would have been significantly darker, richer, riper wines, but the 2012s are all about finesse. One of the recent developments at Harlan Estate has been a reduction in the use of irrigation, which can cause rapid and excessive accumulation of sugars. It may seem hard to believe, but Harlan Estate appears to be still climbing up the ladder of quality. These wines are magnificent. It's as simple as that.
