Clos Fourtet is located directly opposite the large church of Saint-Émilion. The terroir consists of clay-loam soil with a high limestone content. Harvesting is done by hand, and as with all large estates, the first selection takes place in the vineyard. Clos Fourtet is a blend of predominantly Merlot with a small percentage of both Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and has been aged for 16 months over a 60-year period. The wine is made up of 40% new and 40% second-year French oak barriques.
The Clos Fourtet is a deep garnet purple in color and opens with notes of blackberry, plum, and wild blueberry over time, along with hints of forest floor, lavender, baking spices, and potpourri. The palate is full-bodied and has a surprisingly textured finish with soft, smooth tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and fragrant with berry/herb notes and some minerality.

From: Event Horizon: Bordeaux 2024 Primeur (May 2025)
The 2024 Clos Fourtet was picked between September 25 to October 11 at 30 hl/ha. It matured in 40% new oak for a planned 14 to 18 months. This is clearly a level-up from Le Closerie with pure, well-defined and focused blueberry, raspberry, and blood orange scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. This is quite linear, keeping with the style of the vintage, so this doesn't have a peacock's tail like the 2022. Yet this feels tensile and the limestone terroir shapes the mineral-driven finish. This is a well-crafted and delicious Clos Fourtet, a success given the challenges of the vintage.

Mathieu Cuvelier has taken this Saint-Émilion estate to great heights in recent years, which I will examine in detail in a forthcoming standalone piece.
“It was a balancing act,” Cuvelier explained, flanked by Head Winemaker Emmanuel de Saint Salvy. “In the beginning, it was rainy, but summer was dry and quite sunny. We had 5 mm of rain in July and August. Before that, we had quite a big loss from flowering, especially for the Merlot, so we are around 30 hl/ha at Clos Fourtet. The key point in September was to be patient until the end of the month. We started picking on September 25, with the heart beginning on the last day of the month as we wanted full ripeness. We did a strict selection of berries: sorting in the vineyard and using different sorting tables, bain densimètrique and so on. The berries were not crushed, and we did a natural fermentation. We extracted smoothly and slowly through a manual pigeage with no cold maceration, as it would be a mistake to try to extract something you don’t have.”

The 2024 Clos Fourtet is a gorgeous, elegant wine. Medium in body, with terrific persistence and notable purity, Clos Fourtet impresses with its balance more than anything else. Dark blue fruits, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and dried herbs open first, all framed by bright chalky notes that lend freshness. In 2024, Clos Fourtet is built more on persistence than overt textural richness, as has been the case in some recent vintages. Tasted two times.

Clos Fourtet owes its reputation to the Rulleau and Carles families, lords of Figeac, who acquired these vineyards in the 18th century with a special natural drainage. In 2001, Fourtet came into the possession of the Cuvelier family, who kept Fourtet's status as 1st Grand Cru Classé with great passion and investment. This noble 1st Grand Cru Classé is located right in front of the great church of Saint-Emilion, almost in the historic heart of the ancient town. The cellars of the walled vineyards (the Clos) consist of no less than three floors of corridors carved in the caves. Almost as impressive as the wine.
