The story of Anne de Joyeuse

The Anne de Joyeuse winery was founded in 1929 in Limoux, a historic wine region in southern France. The name honors Anne, Duke of Joyeuse, a confidante of King Henry III, who helped establish this region's reputation as a wine-producing region in the 16th century. Today, the cooperative of winemakers works together with respect for nature and tradition. More than 350 winegrowers from the region share the same passion: producing distinctive wines with a southern temperament and refined balance.

Anne de Joyeuse is known for its sustainable approach. Since 1994, the winegrowers have been working according to the Protect Planet charter, which protects biodiversity, avoids herbicides, and preserves the natural balance of the vineyards. Their wines showcase the unique expression of the Haute Vallée de l'Aude, where cool nights and warm days bring exceptional freshness to the grapes.

The Haute Vallée de l'Aude region

The Haute Vallée de l'Aude lies in the southwestern Languedoc region, between Carcassonne and the foothills of the Pyrenees. The altitude and microclimate make this area particularly suitable for Chardonnay. Here, the grapes ripen slowly thanks to the contrast between warm days and cool nights, resulting in a perfect balance of ripe fruit and vibrant acidity.

The soils are primarily limestone and clay, which gives the wines structure and minerality. This combination of terroir and climate gives the Very Chardonnay 2024 its characteristic elegance and length.

The grape: 100% Chardonnay

The Anne de Joyeuse Very Chardonnay 2024 is made entirely from Chardonnay grapes, sourced from carefully selected plots in the Haute Vallée de l'Aude. The grape displays a fresh and refined character, with aromas reminiscent of white flowers, citrus fruit, and ripe peach. Thanks to the balanced climate and natural growing methods, the wine retains its pure expression and vibrant freshness.

Vinification and maturation

After careful pressing, the must is transferred to 220-liter barrels, where fermentation takes place. During the first two months, bâtonnage is applied daily: stirring the lees to develop additional complexity, roundness, and aromas. The wine then matures in these barrels for four months, resulting in a subtle oaky note and a creamy texture without losing its freshness.

This vinification process gives the Very Chardonnay 2024 its characteristic balance between freshness, fruit and elegance.

Tasting notes for the Anne de Joyeuse Very Chardonnay 2024

The wine displays a bright golden yellow color. The nose opens with refined aromas of white flowers, citrus fruit, white peach, and brioche. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and balanced, with notes of ripe fruit and a subtly creamy texture. The finish is long, fresh, and mineral, making it particularly enjoyable with food or as an elegant aperitif.

Serve the wine preferably slightly chilled at 12°C and decant it half an hour before serving to reveal its full aromatic potential.

R

It was in the year 1929 that a group of winegrowers decided to pool their knowledge and know-how, with the aim of making beautiful wines from the upper Aude valley. First of all, the focus was on the red wines, the whites would follow later.

As a tribute to the Duke of Joyeuse, the name Anne de Joyeuse was chosen. This duke was the first to make the beautiful region shine at the court of King Henry III. As a reward and also in exchange for his loyal services, the king offered him the lordship of the lands of Limoux.

The winegrowers decided in 1972 to plant Merlot, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Malbec as red grape varieties. As white grape varieties they chose Chardonnay and Sauvignon. All these varieties are perfectly adapted to the Limoux region and now benefit optimally from the influences of the 4r areas: Mediterranean, Oceania, Pyrenees and Autan.

Over time, winegrowers became aware of the exceptional quality of their terroir. However, this also evoked a great sense of responsibility to maintain this quality as well as possible, and therefore to treat the environment with care. Because, this winery argues: "A responsible operation of the vineyard leads to responsible wines".

Listening to nature is therefore very important to this winery. Over the years, the winemakers' ambitious action plan to protect the environment and their land has become a true philosophy. Therefore, the engineering team and board of directors considered it extremely essential to create an even more ambitious specification. One that goes further than the Agri Confidence Volet Environnement certification, limiting vineyard interventions, participating in the development of ecosystems, energy management, etc. The Protect Planet® was started for this purpose, as a supplement to the agro-ecological method.

All in all, this dedicated and extremely careful working method ensures beautiful wines with an authentic taste of a protected nature.
