In 2001 Sandra Tavares da Silva (Quinta do Vale D. Maria and Quinta de Chocapalha) and her husband Jorge Borges (then Niepoort, now Passadouro) started to realize their dream. They bought a vineyard of very old vines of 2 hectares in Vale de Mendiz next to Noval. The annual harvest is 4000 bottles and 100 Magnums. From the first harvest they have become one of the icons of the Douro and are nationally and internationally acclaimed for the charm and character of their wines that represent the unique terroir of the Douro region.
The Guru comes from the DOC Douro (Cima Corgo) from 50 year old vines in the Pinhão valley. This branco is made from the typical grape varieties Gouveio, Viosinho, Rabigato and Códega do Larinho. The Gouveio is the Portuguese name for the well-known Spanish Godello grape. The wine is matured for 8 months in mainly used French oak barrels. In the mouth the Guru is dry, lush, complex with stone fruit, lime, grapefruit, light toasted tones and a hint of vanilla. Deliciously mineral with a pleasant bitterness with very pleasant refined acids and a long finish. This fantastic white Portuguese wine has an enormous storage potential and is a perfect accompaniment to grilled (fatty) fish, shellfish and poultry.

The Wine Advocate RP 94 Reviewed by: Luis Gutiérrez Release Price: $45 Drink Date: 2024 - 2034 The white 2022 Guru comes from a number of old vineyards, all planted with a field blend of varieties, in the village of Murça. It fermented, by vineyard, in barrels and matured in them, with only 5% new barrels (just to renew them) and a majority of 500-liter ones—a far cry from the first years of small barrel and 100% new oak. In principle, it doesn't go through malolactic fermentation, and the wine has a lot of tension and even citrus freshness, quite impressive for such a warm year. It's textured and elegant, very nicely crafted and balanced. The wine has a moderate 12.5% alcohol, meaning some plots were even lower (and some higher, of course). It's approachable now, but it should age very nicely.
Wine & Soul, Jorge Serôdio and Sandra Tavares, have concentrated their efforts in the last years in the vineyards. They have grown from the initial two hectares for Pintas to over 40 hectares today. The portfolio has also grown, and so have volumes. They now produce 180,000 bottles, including Port.
