The 2023 Fidelio from Realm Cellars is an exceptional Sauvignon Blanc from the Napa Valley, California. This wine is produced from grapes sourced from the Farella Estate Vineyard in the Coombsville AVA, a cooler climate region that contributes to the freshness and complexity of the wine. The vinification of Fidelio is special, with the wine being aged in a combination of neutral French oak barrels, concrete eggs, and terracotta amphorae. These multiple aging methods add layers of complexity and depth to the wine.

In the glass, the 2023 Fidelio presents itself with a bright, straw-yellow color. The bouquet opens with aromas of tropical fruits such as pineapple and guava, complemented by notes of passion fruit and a subtle mineral undertone. On the palate, the wine offers a rich texture with a lively acidity, resulting in a fresh and balanced taste experience. The finish is long and refreshing, with lingering fruity and mineral nuances.

The Fidelio label

Fidelio is the name of the only opera composed by Ludwig van Beethoven, first performed in 1805. From the Latin word for "fidelity", Fidelio was also the password required to gain access to a secret ceremony in the 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut, directed, produced and co-written by Stanley Kubrick.

This is the second Fidelio label Realm has commissioned from artist Sylvia Ji, a graduate of the San Francisco Academy of Arts whose paintings have been exhibited internationally in solo and group shows. The current label, for a work titled “Leonore,” radiates red and orange hues that evoke the wine’s warm citrus and tropical fruit notes. Ji drew inspiration from Beethoven’s opera, in which Leonore, the main character, disguises herself as a prison guard named Fidelio to save her husband. This label is truly an evolution, as Ji painted over her first sample, leaving embellishments from the original art, including flowers and even butterflies, a symbol of transformation that resonates with Realm. This is a stunning work from Ji, a lifelong student of international culture whose art encompasses diverse themes of femininity, beauty, life, love and death.

Obtaining the grapes from the best Napa Valley vineyards has been Realm Estates' philosophy since its inception in 2002. Realm's wines have since become the gems of Napa Valley. The wine portfolio includes both vineyard bottlings and proprietary blends. The single vineyard wines are place-driven terroir. The blends such as the famous The Bard are made from varieties in the tradition of the great wines of Bordeaux. The Realm wines now have a cult status and are especially famous because they are accessible fairly quickly but can also rest for decades in the cellar - so something for everyone.
