Description
The Primeiras Vinhas Alvarinho Vinho Verde is 85% fermented in stainless steel and 15% in oak and is incredibly well integrated. The Albarino (Alvarinho) vineyards are around 40 years old. In the glass the wine is very light yellow with a bit of a greenish tinge which still betrays its youth. The wine has an aromatic nose with minerals and a hint of citrus that slowly unfolds in the glass. It is a medium bodied, fresh, dry and very elegant wine with a lot of length which is still youthful but can certainly be drunk but can also remain in the cellar until 2035+. Great price/quality ratio.

2018 Quinta de Soalheiro Alvarinho Primeiras Vinhas
Rating
93
The 2018 Alvarinho Primeiras Vinhas is partly (15%) oak aged for six months in used French barrels and comes in at 13% alcohol and is bone dry. When last seen, this was in a somewhat awkward condition, but it held plenty of promise. It is still a young puppy, but it is starting to fulfill that promise. Likely to be very long lived, this is textured with velvet and finishes with power. The modest wood treatment gives this a touch of cream, but the fruit easily rises above it while the acidity dices the wood into tiny splinters. By the next day, you hardly notice that there is wood. Overall, this is beautiful—not surprising for this benchmark bottling. It is still on the upswing. You might find rewards if you hold it for another couple of years. It will become more expressive. There is no rush to dive into it. It is a great value, always one of the best intersections of price and quality in the region. Of course, its unoaked siblings are as well. Which you prefer is often a matter of taste and how you intend to use them. They are very close this issue, but this might win because it is a year older and more developed.

SOALHEIRO ALVARINHO MONÇÃO E MELGAÇO VINHO VERDE PRIMEIRAS VINHAS 2021
Score

This has aromas of peaches, apricots, mango stones and salted lemons. Fruity and fresh, with a medium body, creamy texture and refreshing finish. From old vines of alvarinho. Drink now.

Quinta de Soalheiro is located in the northernmost point of Portugal, in the sub-region of the Vinho Verde area, called Monção e Melgaço. Protected by a mountain range in the north, the vineyards are ideally located for growing the Alvarinho grape, with just enough of everything: sun, heat and rainfall. It was these unique circumstances that led João Antonio Cerdeira to plant his first alvarinho vineyard here in 1974. João has since been succeeded by his children Luis and Maria, who have further developed and perfected the company. Everything is done here with a great sense of detail. The vineyards are cultivated organically and the winemaking process has only one purpose: to make pure and harmonious wines. Soalheiro has a great reputation both in Portugal itself and abroad.
