Description
Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira in the Alentejo region. This is one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal. In the beautiful Alentejo, Herdade do Sobroso has a perfect location with its vineyards located on the banks of the Guadiana River and its tributary the Rio dos Patos or the River of the Ducks. The trademark is the ducks on the labels. It is the perfect setting for the ripening of the grapes and few vineyards have this luxury and this partly explains why this winery can make very beautiful wines because there is never any water debt. In addition to the fact that there is sufficient water, this region is the only one within the Alentejo that has the influence of the ocean, which ensures healthy ripening.
The Herdade do Sobroso Reserva Branco is made from 100% Antão Vaz grape. With this wine, the winery carefully examines the exact right moment of ripeness of the grapes. And when this moment comes, the grapes are picked by hand and then destemmed and lightly crushed. The fermentation takes place in stainless steel barrels at a controlled temperature for 25 days, after which the wine is allowed to mature further in oak barrels for 6 months "Sur Lie" and is then bottle-aged for some time.
The Sobro Branco Reserva Branco (Barrique Select) has a clear color in the glass with a very light green/yellowish cast. Fresh notes of flowers and tropical fruits on the nose. The wine is medium-bodied in the mouth, somewhat spicy and very layered with the complexity of the Antão Vaz, which gives the wine extra freshness and intensity. This wine reflects the terroir of Alentejo. This is a real terroir wine and is a nice gastronomic glass with refined fish such as sea bream, tuna or grilled brill. Also a great wine that combines ideally with creamy sauces with rich fish dishes and ripe cheeses.
Registered vinologist and culinary journalist Anne-Wies van Oosten recommends this wine with a bouillabaisse with redfish, cod, catfish, peeled mussels, prawns and raw squid rings.

2019 Vintage Tasted: Nov 2020
This is a young wine, still feeling its potentially ripe and rich way forward. But there is plenty there already with the ripe white fruits, fine balanced acidity and touches of spice. This is going to be a delicious wine from 2021. Roger Voss
Grandes Escolhas - 17/20
2018 Vintage Tasted: Jun 2019

Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira in the Alentejo region. This is one of the oldest wine producing regions in Portugal with reports of wine being made here since before the Roman occupation of the Iberia Peninsula. Furthermore, Herdade do Sobroso as a perfect location with its vineyards located on the banks of the Guadiana river.
Its location between the river on the south and the hills on the north make the perfect conditions for the ripening of the grapes. Also, besides being inland, this region is the single one in Alentejo with the influence of the coastal weather which provides for cool summer nights thus providing for great thermal amplitudes which improve the ripening. With its 1600 hectares, Herdade do Sobroso is a landmark of the region.
It's 60 hectares of vineyard, the Luxury Wine Hotel and abundant wildlife make it a mandatory passage point. In its premises is possible to stay hosted at the hotel while visiting the winery and having wine tastings as well as visiting the estate premises on the search of the local wildlife. Perfect for the amateurs in search of the wild boars and deer as well as the more curious birdwatchers.Producing wine since 2006, Herdade do Sobroso soon established its reputation of making singular, terroir respecting wines that conquer admirers all over the world. Using local varieties such as Trincadeira, Aragonez, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Antão Vaz, Alvarinho, together with French varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Alicante Bouschet and Petit Verdot.
Herdade do Sobroso is managing the vineyard according to the Sustainability principals, respecting the autochthonous fauna and flora, while the winemaking process is non-interventionist to respect the terroir.
