Description
The legendary Cartuxa winery is named after the Carthusian monastery next to which it is located. That monastery was once purchased by the De Almeida family and is now back in the hands of the monastic order, but the founder of Cartuxa, Eugénio de Almeida, started growing grapes on the lands. And where the Carthusian monks lead an exceptionally sober and secluded life, the wines of Cartuxa are anything but. Rich, full and fruit-dominated wines, that are beautifully balanced and never become heavy. This applies to the entire range of wines that come from this 400-hectare winery: from the very affordable everyday wines to the iconic Pêra Manca.
The Cartuxa comes from the DOC Alentejo and comes from various vineyards of the Pinheiros, Casito, Álamo da Horta and Valbom estates located on a subsoil of granite, clay and slate. The winemaker of Cartuxa is the iconic Pedro Baptista (famous for his Cartuxa Pêra-Manca - the Peter of Portugal). This white Branco from Cartuxa is a blend of the Antão Vaz, Roupeiro and Arinto - typical grapes from the Alentejo. This wine sees no wood and therefore focuses entirely on freshness and fruit. The fermentation and maturation takes place entirely in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.
The wine is surprisingly rich and dry with yellow apple, pear, peach, fresh herbs such as rosemary in the notes. In the mouth fresh aromas of apples, stone fruit and melon, stimulating bitterness and a pleasantly fresh aftertaste. A delicious wine with poultry, fish dishes, pasta with creamy sauces, vegetable risotto, gratinated vegetables, soft cheeses.
