Description
Jean Rijckaert started making wine in 1990 in the Mâconnais region, where he had settled, as co-founder of the Verget wine merchants in Sologny. In 1998, when creating Domaine Rijckaert, Jean purchased 4 hectares of vineyards in Maconnais (mainly in the Viré-Clessé area) and, as a lover of the Jura region and convinced of the area's wine-growing potential, 5 hectares in Arbois. A visionary. Each region has its own wine cellar, so you can work as close to the vines as possible. Mâconnais wine is made in Davayé. And in the Jura it is made in Villette-Les-Arbois, a wine village near the wine capital of the Jura.
At Domaine Rijckaert they promote biodiversity in the vineyards, where chemicals are never used. By minimal tillage they improve erosion on the steepest vineyards and it helps the vines to take root in the deepest parts of the soil: This improves the water balance in the plant and in the grapes and provides the plant with mineral nutrition and brings the specific properties of the soil. It also preserves the biodiversity of the macroflora, as well as the microflora. This is crucial for the wines as the fermentation is “spontaneous”. That is, it comes mainly from the microorganisms that naturally occur in the grapes.
The POUILLY-FUISSE "La Roche" comes from a beautiful stony location on the Roche de Vergisson plateau and is a wine of great mineral density, expressive and delicate. Of course, this Rijckaert Pouilly-Fuisse La Roche Vieilles Vignes is a 100% Chardonnay from old vines. The cool environment on the western slopes of the Roche de Solutré gives this wine the beautiful acidity and the limestone plateau and the stones that typical wet stone/pebble in the aftertaste. The wine is very expressive and delicate. In summary: A beauty of a wine.

Professional Reviews
Parker
The 2010 Pouilly-Fuisse La Roche has a generous grilled almond and walnut-scented bouquet that is quite intense: a love it/hate it bouquet depending on whether you like a touch of oxidation. Here, I think it works quite well. The palate is more orthodox with a confident opening of orange rind and spice. The acidity is nicely judged and it is voluminous but delineated on the layered finish. There is a lot going on here, perhaps a wine that deserves one or two years in bottle? Excellent.
Jean Rijckaert worked with compatriot Jean-Marie Guffens at Verget before branching out on his own, augmenting his Macon vineyards with those in Jura. These were generally top quality Chardonnays that were beautifully crafted and whose quality was conspicuous during blind tastings.
