Château Pichon Longueville Baron is located on a prime terroir in Pauillac, known for its gravelly soils conducive to the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape variety in the vineyards. The estate covers approximately 73 hectares, with Cabernet Sauvignon comprising the majority of the plantings, supplemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Vineyard management at Pichon Longueville Baron is meticulous, with an emphasis on sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The combination of the unique terroir and careful vineyard management contributes to the distinctive character of the wines produced on the estate. Château Pichon Longueville Baron follows a traditional approach to winemaking, combining modern techniques with respect for the estate's heritage and history. The winemaking team, led by the talented technical director, seeks to express the nuances of the terroir in each vintage. The vinification process involves careful sorting of the grapes, temperature-controlled fermentation and maturation in a combination of new and used oak barrels. Oak has been used judiciously, allowing the wines to develop complexity and structure without overpowering the fruit characteristics. The wines of Château Pichon Longueville Baron are known for their depth, elegance and aging potential. They typically display a rich bouquet of dark fruit, cassis and cedarwood, with a firm tannin structure that offers excellent aging potential. The estate's commitment to quality and consistency has cemented its status as one of the leading producers in the Pauillac appellation and Bordeaux as a whole.
2022 had a cold and dry winter, followed by a warm spring, which ensured a fairly early bud break. Early April: a severe frost period, but limited consequences. May: flowering and fruiting took place under very good weather conditions. June: high temperatures allowed the grapes to develop quickly, with a first heat wave in mid-June, followed by a rainy period that is favorable for the vines. A sunny summer, with generally high temperatures and rain-free heat waves. These conditions caused water restrictions in our vines, however qualitatively for our grapes, which yielded a promising tannin and anthocyanin richness. In mid-August it was rainy and cool, which stimulated photosynthetic activity. From August 22, a four-week period of dry and very warm weather stimulated the ripening of seeds and polyphenols. This period without rainfall allowed the breakdown of the aromas of the Cabernets. The harvest took place from September 8 to 21 for Merlot and from September 19 to October 3 for Cabernet-Sauvignon.
The Château Pichon Longueville Baron 2022 is a blend of 81% Cabernet-Sauvignon and 19% Merlot and is aged 70% in new barrels and 30% in single-year barrels for 18 months. Maceration temperatures were maintained between 25 and 27°C. The extractions were mainly carried out during mid-fermentation, and the duration of maceration after fermentation was refined through daily tastings. The Merlots were drawn from September 29 to October 11 and the Cabernets from October 10 to 24. The malolactic fermentation took place quickly under pomace, allowing the wine to be transferred to barrels in separate batches. This was completed on November 4.

An unusually gourmand, sensual wine from this estate, the 2022 Pichon-Longueville Baron bursts with aromas of crème de cassis, sweet dark berries, licorice, lilac and pencil shavings. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with excellent concentration and a rather rich, supple profile. A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, it's the result of sub-block by sub-block picking and cooler than usual fermentation temperatures.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Pichon Baron was picked 8 September to 3 October and matured in 70% new oak. It has wonderful precision on the nose, with intense blackberry and bilberry fruit, crushed stone and graphite. The oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is tensile right from the start. Taut and linear, fresh, quite saline with a nuanced touch of black pepper toward the finish. Real pedigree and sophistication here, this is a magnificent Pichon-Baron that achieves a new level of precision thanks to the more piecemeal Sauternes-inspired harvest in tandem with their new winery.
