Château Péby Faugères is a unique winery with a very small Merlot vineyard of 7.45 hectares in the extension of the south of St. Emilion, with an exceptional terroir of clay-lime with old vines (approx. 45 years) planted on slopes next to Ch . Faugères where production is carried out with very low yields (20hl/ha). The wine matures for 18 months in 65% new oak and the fermentation takes place partly in small oak barrels (microvinification). The wonder duo Michel Rolland and Stephan Von Neipperg provide the advice here. Only 9,000 bottles of this delicacy are produced for worldwide distribution.
The wine is packaged in a sculpted bottle with an image of a blackbird and for good reason. From the 2009 vintage onwards, Silvio Denz gave Château Péby Faugères the image that has come to define it: The Blackbird and the Grapes, or the Blackbird designed by René Lalique in 1928, which is engraved on every bottle of Château Péby Faugères. Silvio Denz is a passionate collector, with a particular fondness for the art of René Lalique - to the extent that he took over the company. Merlot is the grape variety used at Château Péby Faugères, and he has managed to unite in perfect harmony his two loves: the art of René Lalique and the art of wine which he strives for perfection at Château Péby Faugères. The word "merlot" means "little blackbird" in French dialect. The name was given to the grape because of its black color and also the fact that blackbirds like to eat them.
The Château Péby Faugères Saint-Émilion Grand Cru (Grand Cru Classé) is made from 100% Merlot, the Péby Faugères has a deep garnet purple color and emerges from the glass with inviting notes of blueberry pie, plum pudding, chocolate-covered cherries and mulberries with hints of eucalyptus, cinnamon stick, cloves and unsmoked cigars plus a hint of a cigar box. The taste is full, tight and muscular and has a rock-solid structure of firm, velvety tannins and a wonderful freshness, which ends very long with many mineral notes.

The 2020 Péby Faugères sports a deep purple-black color and pronounced notes of blueberry preserves, plum pudding and Christmas cake, followed by hints of licorice, Indian spices and sandalwood with a waft of wild mushrooms. The full-bodied palate is jam-packed with concentrated black fruit preserves, framed by super firm, ripe, grainy tannins and tons of freshness, finishing very long and spicy. This wine has all the volume nobs turned to maximum—and it works! Definitely one for the hedonists, though.

A very fine tannined red with a linear line running through it, which drives the whole thing. Black berry, bark and walnut character. Medium to full body with a juicy finish. Light bitter lemons and oranges. Chewy, yet the tannins are well-integrated. 100% merlot. From organically grown grapes.

I loved the 2022 Château Peby Faugères, a full-bodied, concentrated, powerful Saint-Emilion coming from the cooler eastern edge of Saint-Emilion. Cassis, currants, graphite, spicy wood, and dried herbs define the bouquet, and it brings beautiful depth of fruit, building yet ripe tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. It has a rare mix of opulence and elegance and is going to shine with just 3-5 years of bottle age. If you need your Bordeaux to be lean, anemic, and devoid of fruit, look elsewhere

The Esquissaud family acquired the estates of Châteaux Faugères and Péby Faugères in 1823 and inherited in 1987 by Pierre-Bernard Guisez. Until then, all the wine produced had been sold to a single local merchant. P. Guisez and his wife Corinne wanted to get more involved in the vineyards and went in search of the best quality. Their wish was to see these exquisite terroirs become jewels in the crown of the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru appellation, a wish that would be fulfilled in a short time with the help of Michel Rolland. From the year 2000, the wines of Château Faugères and Château Péby Faugères have occupied a place among the very best. Robert Parker described Péby Faugères as one of the "24 best Bordeaux wines" and "legend of the future".
The wine is aged for 18 months on 65% new oak and the fermentation is partly done in small oak barrels (microvinification). These are turned up to three times a day by means of a wheel system. The wonder duo Michel Rolland and Stephan Von Neipperg provides the advice here. This top wine can keep for 20 years. Thanks to the similarities in both color (black berries) and the fact that blackbirds like the berries of the merlot grape, these were linked.
It has since become an iconic winery with very high ratings including even and 100 out of 100 from Parker so we are talking about an absolute Saint-Émilion Grand Cru.
