Description
EN PRIMEUR DISCOUNT VALID UNTIL 31/12/2024 - DELIVERY SPRING 2025
Château Larrivet Haut-Brion from Graves-Pessac-Léognan is owned by the Gervoson family and today it is director Bruno Lemoine who takes the cru to the highest place within the appellation. This wine is made from a combination of predominantly 61% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, supplemented with 21% Cabernet Franc, and 18% Merlot grapes. The vines have an average age of approximately 30 years old and therefore give the wine a pleasant amount of concentrate and strength. The harvest is done manually when the grapes have reached their perfect ripeness. The wine then matures partly for 40% in new French oak barriques, partly in barriques that have been used once before and partly in barriques that have been used twice before. On the nose, this wine offers pronounced, soft notes of (over) ripe black fruit, a hint of leather and a smoky undertone with some light notes of licorice.
Opaque purple-black in color, the 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion bursts out of the glass with wonderfully fragrant scents of black raspberries, Morello cherries and wild blueberries with suggestions of blackcurrant pastilles, candied violets, chocolate mint and forest floor. The medium to full flavor is packed with red and black fruit layers, framed by firm, exquisitely ripe, velvety tannins and bold freshness, which finishes long and fragrant.

The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion offers up aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, raspberry, violet, orange zest, iris and ripe plums, followed by a medium to full-bodied palate that's supple, seamless and elegant, its succulent core of fruit framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a floral finish. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 21% Cabernet Franc—the most significant portion of this grape variety ever used at this estate run by Bruno Lemoine—this is one of the most interesting wines that this estate has produced in recent years. It matured in 15% amphorae, 50% new barrels and the balance in tanks.

Broad and structured, but supple and sleek, with fine-grained tannins. Medium- to full-bodied. Hints of coffee beans and cedar. Solid finish. Bright.

From: 2021 Bordeaux En Primeur: Back to Classicism (May 2022)
The 2021 Larrivet Haut-Brion is a bit of a freak. The Merlot was decimated by frost, so the 2021 is all Cabernet. Not surprisingly, strong Cabernet inflections mark the bouquet. Dark and beautifully layered, with terrific persistence, Larrivet Haut-Brion is going to be a fascinating wine to watch over the coming years. The tannins need to soften, but there is a good deal of potential here. Hints of cedar, licorice and earthiness linger.

This château, located directly opposite Ch. Haut Bailly is a very interesting terroir of very good quality. The prices of the wines remain favorable for the quality offered. It is owned by the Gervoson family and Bruno Lemoine is its director. Since 2015, they have a new cellar master, François Gaudichon, who is an oenologist and has gained experience in the Burgundy region (Vosne Romanée). Since then, the advice has come from Stéphane Derenoncourt (formerly Michel Rolland).
The history of Château Larrivet Haut-Brion goes back to 1840, the year in which the château was first mentioned among the first plantings of Pessac-Léognan. To this day, the château has become more and more famous. After several name changes from Château de Canolle, to La Rivette and Château Brion-Larrivet, the winery was renamed Château Haut-Brion Larrivet in 1874 by the then owner Ernest Laurent, a Bordeaux négotiant (officially recognized and authorized dealer in Bordeaux wines).
In 1893 the winery was sold again and then it came into the possession of Jacques Guillemaud in 1941 and acquired its present name: Château Larrivet Haut-Brion. Today it owns approximately 75 hectares of vineyards on mainly gravel subsoil with sand and clay. Château Larrivet Haut-Brion produces about 4500 liters of red wine per hectare and 4000 liters of white wine per hectare and plants 7700 vines per hectare. This is 2300 vines below average and this greatly benefits both the intensity and quality of the wine. Her red wines age on average for 14 to 18 months in different oak barrels and then another 10 to 11 months — depending on the vintage — in the cellars of the winery.
