Granja Nuestra SeƱora de Remelluri is a winery from the Rioja region. This winery has vineyards in two villages: Labastida Alava and San Vicente de La Sonsierra in the Rioja Alta region. Until 2009, the grapes from the two vineyards were used interchangeably, but since then they have separated them and created two new wines called "Lindes de Remelluri ViƱedos de Labastida" and "Lindes de Remelluri ViƱedos de San Vicente."
These wines have their own distinct personalities, but share the (rightly) very high ratings, which is quite unique given their price point. These wines can compete with the often much more expensive Rioja wines. Guia PenĆn, Parker, and even our own WineLife are unwavering in their praise for this new Rioja star. The Lindes de Remelluri is a beautiful, accessible red wine. Fresh fruit, a touch of mountain herbs, minerals, optimal acidity, and a very pleasant finish. Silky on the entry, then wrapped with juicy dark fruit, complicated by flowers and a hint of blood orange. Powerful yet supple, with a seamless texture, fine-grained tannins, and impressive energy on the finish. A delicious new way to experience Rioja. Excellent value.

Telmo Rodriguez has been involved with La Granja Remelluri again for several years now. Telmo's father purchased Remelluri in 1968. The property is beautifully situated at an altitude of about 600 meters, about 15 minutes east of Haro. In the early 1990s, the young Telmo made a splash with Remelluri's wines. A difference of opinion with his father, Rodriguez, led Telmo to leave Remelluri. Telmo has since returned and is working with his sister to restore Remelluri. The Reserva 2008 (the first vintage under Telmo's supervision) was recently released, and the results are impressive. Remelluri's wines are more classic in style than Telmo's own estate and are characterized by a high degree of elegance.

One of the two wines first produced in 2010 in this project, the 2021 ViƱedos de San Vicente de la Sonsierra was produced with grapes from three families, a total of 4.2 hectares. It is fruit-driven and has a sense of high ripeness despite the 13.7% alcohol, with some earthy sensations, giving it a rustic twist and dusty tannins. 75,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2023.
Lindes de Remelluri is a project from the Remelluri team in which they bottle wines from different villages, using grapes from local growers. The ones with more Garnacha, which coincide with the ones at a higher altitude, come in a Burgundy bottle, and the others come in a Bordeaux bottle, following the old logic of using a bottle to show the character of the wine (i.e., ViƱa Real versus Imperial and ViƱa Albina versus Monte Real). The range keeps growing, and there are more Grandes Lindes wines I didn't taste.

With Remelluri, Telmo Rodriguez is putting the Rioja on the map as a producer of original terroir wines. Long before the Rodriguez family settled on Remelluri, wine was already being made on the estate. As early as the 14th century, the monks here made wine from grapes from the surrounding vineyards. In 1967, the house came into the hands of Jaime Rodriguez, the father of pioneer and idiosyncratic winemaker Telmo Rodriguez. Jaime immediately makes radical changes. For example, he decided to only make wine from grapes from his own vineyards, which was exceptional in the Rioja at the time. We also strive to cultivate the vineyards as naturally as possible, in order to preserve the special character of the vineyards as much as possible. In 2010, the vineyards were officially certified organic under the leadership of Telmo.
In the early 1990s, Telmo joined the company. The story goes that his father wants to keep the production of the red wines for himself, so Telmo comes up with the beautiful white Remelluri Blanco. After several years of making wine in other parts of Spain, Telmo returned to Remelluri in 2010, where he took up winemaking together with his sister Amaya. As a great advocate of terroir wines, he has a clear opinion about the wines of the Rioja. Because winemakers often buy most of the grapes from grape growers, they have lost the connection with the vineyards and the terroir, he believes. In addition, the low prices of the grapes have caused winegrowers to neglect or even grub up the more challenging vineyards, often the older, high-altitude plots. With the wines of Remelluri, Telmo wants to show that the Rioja has many different terroirs that can be beautifully expressed in the wines.
