2021 Prinz Schönhell Großes Gewächs

The Prinz Riesling Schönhell GG 2021. The grapes for this wine were harvested in the original Schönhell vineyards. Deep, slightly sandy, but also stony clay-loess soils predominate here. The vineyard itself faces due south and is sloping, which means that the sunlight is very good there. The name Schönhell, like all “Hellen” or “Höllen”, is derived from the waste heap, and not, as one might think, from the “Hölle”. A slope or hill is called a heap, i.e. a beautiful slope.

The grapes for this wine come from thinned vines planted in 1970. The (small) grapes were golden yellow and ripe, some even overripe with a tiny bit of raisin berries. After bottling in April, the wine matured in the bottle until its first sale in September of the following year.
