Description
In 1981, Mas Martinet was born, a life project and a dream come true. The brand is the result of the passion of Josep Lluís Pérez and Montse Ovejero and is now owned by the entire family Josep Lluís, Montse, Sara, Núria, Adrià, Marc, Jordi, Armando, Pilar. The unique wines from Mas Martinet in Priorat have enormous storage potential. Martinet has been at the top of the Priorat appellation for more than 25 years. In recent years, father Pérez has withdrawn from Mas Martinet and the wines are vinified by Sara Perez (see also Venus, Dido and Gratallops ). Sara is also the wife of another Icon, Rene Barbier Jr, known from Clos Mogador , and Rene and Sara also make wines under their own names, namely Sara Pérez y René Barbier . Of course we also carry these wines.
Clos Martinet comes from the plots of the Mas d'en Martinet estate, located in the wine region of the town of Gratallops. The land, which contains slate, and the different exposures of the vineyard give this wine the typical character of an estate every year. Mas Martinet is one of the pioneers of the new Priorat, the project of the Pérez family. Since 2017 they no longer use a sorting table and they do not do pied de cuve, but all their fermentations are with the yeasts of the grapes; and they stopped cooling the grapes 15 years ago. From 2006 to 2016 they increased the number of full bunches in their fermentations, which are now all 100% full bunches for all wines except the Martinet Bru.
They have 25 hectares of vineyards in five different locations that are farmed organically and biodynamically with permaculture and regenerative agriculture. The Martinet Bru comes partly from an estate called Mas Seró, located in the area of Masos de Falset, the estate of Serra Alta, at an altitude of 400 m and facing southwest, and an estate located in Torroja, which is colder and deeper . It is a blend of Garnatxa Negra, Carinyena, Sirà and a little bit of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, naturally organic/biodynamically made without chemicals.
The flagship Clos Martinet is the wine that started it all and is still a blend of Garnacha (Tinta and Peluda), Syrah, Cariñena, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Monastrell as it has been since the beginning of this now iconic wine. It is Elegance with a capital E and has many similarities with, among others, a Clos Mogador (yes, Sara's wife, Rene Barbier). Clos Martinet is a terraced vineyard of only five hectares, planted in 1986 on a llicorella slate terroir with a lot of iron and large rocks in the soil. Depending on the date picked, the varieties are fermented at three different maturation times in two concrete barrels and 200 liter oak barrels with native yeast and whole bunches. At the beginning and end of the élevage it remains in concrete and in between they used oak barrels of 2,000 and 4,100 liters and about 20% glass demijohns and amphorae. The wine is subtle and insinuating. It is medium-bodied, fresh and balanced. Dark ruby red color with dark fruit aromas together with graphite and espresso. Both the nose and the taste are very complex. This is a very elegant Clos Martinet. It is a deep, warm, tasty and elegant wine. The most classic and recognizable Priorat. The 2020 is a collector's item - 97/100 points and 40% less of this vintage was made than previous years.

The nose of the 2021 Clos Martinet is amazing, very different, perfumed, elegant and nuanced. I wondered why, and there was an explanation. In 2021, it had a shorter vinification, and part was fermented with carbonic maceration and matured mostly in concrete (like in 2009, when it was 100% in concrete, a one-off) and the rest in a 2,000-liter oak foudre. There's a lot of Garnacha (65%) and the vineyard is quite warm, so they had to find a way to equalize it down. It has 13.5% alcohol and a vibrant palate that is fine-boned and elegant, full of energy and an electric sensation of lightness. It's tasty and makes you salivate, with an almost salty touch. This is an amazing vintage for Clos Martinet. 16,696 bottles, 216 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in June 2023.
Mas Martinet is the project from the Pérez Ovejero family, where they work 25 hectares of vineyards and produce 60,000 bottles. They learned a lot from the 2021 vintage, a year with plenty of water (more than the actual rain total, because there was 60 centimeters of snow that didn't compute in the annual rainfall), and they discovered that they could keep the character of the wines with less ripeness in the grapes. There are two wines that were denied the appellation of origin because they don't reach the minimum alcohol required by the appellation.

At Mas Martinet, all chemicals in the vineyards have been banned. Sara and her team at Martinet are always looking for new perspectives, with a culture based on balance, sustainability and harmony with nature. Deeply committed to tradition, to the environment and to people. They recover some varieties and reinvent some processes and materials according to the principles of agroecology and minimal intervention with maximum respect for the people who work on it. They process the crops in an environmentally friendly manner, treating the processes as respectfully as possible. Examples include growing legumes and wild species of flowers and shrubs in order to provide food for the entire chain. they base us on the lunar calendar to optimize (bio-dynamic) the natural treatments we use in the vineyard, such as compost and herbal infusions.

The wine press is unanimous in its praise for the wines of this iconic house. Wines getting points close to the maximum limit of 100 points is standard rather than exceptional. Supply from the relatively small stamp vineyards is very limited and the storage potential of the wines is unprecedentedly long.
