Description
In 1981, Mas Martinet was born, a life project and a dream come true. The brand is the result of the passion of Josep Lluís Pérez and Montse Ovejero and is now owned by the entire family Josep Lluís, Montse, Sara, Núria, Adrià, Marc, Jordi, Armando, Pilar. The unique wines from Mas Martinet in Priorat have enormous storage potential. Martinet has been at the top of the Priorat appellation for more than 25 years. In recent years, father Pérez has withdrawn from Mas Martinet and the wines are vinified by Sara Perez (see also Venus, Dido and Gratallops ). Sara is also the wife of another Icon, Rene Barbier Jr, known from Clos Mogador , and Rene and Sara also make wines under their own names, namely Sara Pérez y René Barbier. Of course we also carry these wines.
Clos Martinet comes from the plots of the Mas d'en Martinet estate, located in the wine region of the town of Gratallops. The land, which contains slate, and the different exposures of the vineyard give this wine the typical character of an estate every year. Mas Martinet is one of the pioneers of the new Priorat, the project of the Pérez family. Since 2017 they no longer use a sorting table and they do not do pied de cuve, but all their fermentations are with the yeasts of the grapes; and they stopped cooling the grapes 15 years ago. From 2006 to 2016 they increased the number of full bunches in their fermentations, which are now all 100% full bunches for all wines except the Martinet Bru.
They have 25 hectares of vineyards in five different locations that are farmed organically and biodynamically with permaculture and regenerative agriculture. The Martinet Bru comes partly from an estate called Mas Seró, located in the area of Masos de Falset, the estate of Serra Alta, at an altitude of 400 m and facing southwest, and an estate located in Torroja, which is colder and deeper . It is a blend of Garnatxa Negra, Carinyena, Sirà and a little bit of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, naturally organic/biodynamically made without chemicals.
The Cami Pesseroles is named after the vineyard where the Garnacha and Cariñena grapes come from, a plot that was planted together in 1939. The Cami Pesseroles is the old path that surrounds the three small vineyards where the 95 year(!) old vines are located between Porrera and Gratallops. Two grapes, Carinena (60%) and Garnacha (40%) form the basis here on a very poor subsoil full of rocks. Very low production, only 2 hectares with a naturally low yield due to the age of the vines in combination with the structure of the soil, resulting in an enormous concentration in the glass. The whole bunches were trampled underfoot and then fermented in two 500 liter open chestnut barrels with native yeasts for almost three weeks. The wine was pressed and aged in 650 liter chestnut and acacia, cherry and oak barrels. The wine has only 13.5% alcohol and has a very elegant and fresh style. The wine is precise, aromatic and open. That is surprisingly elegant for Cariñena, a grape that almost always has a rustic touch. Only around 2,000 bottles of Cami Pesseroles are ever made. Pure minerality and rusticity with a tribute to the Priorat. A very beautiful bouquet of raspberry, blackcurrants, rosemary, cocoa, soft impression of vanilla and a pleasant smoky undertone. Silky soft start to an incredibly long mineral finish. Clearly a wine with great storage potential, but also a very impressive experience when young.

The red 2019 Camí Pesseroles comes from a co-plantation of Garnacha and Cariñena planted in 1939. Whole clusters were foot trodden and fermented with indigenous yeasts for almost three weeks in open-top 500-liter chestnut wood barrels and an oak vat. The wine was pressed and matured in 650-liter chestnut and acacia, cherry and oak barrels. There was a heat wave, and the Cariñena was blocked. The wine has a very light color and very good tension in the palate. It's very young and elegant, and it has more of the profile of the Escurçons, which in 2019 is more concentrated than Pesseroles. 13.5% alcohol, very good freshness... Delicate like no other vintage. Surprising. 1,200 bottles produced.
In 2020, they lost 86% of the crop to mildew and black rot, so they implemented a lot of changes in 2021. Both 2019 and 2020 are atypical vintages here.

At Mas Martinet, all chemicals in the vineyards have been banned. Sara and her team at Martinet are always looking for new perspectives, with a culture based on balance, sustainability and harmony with nature. Deeply committed to tradition, to the environment and to people. They recover some varieties and reinvent some processes and materials according to the principles of agroecology and minimal intervention with maximum respect for the people who work on it. They process the crops in an environmentally friendly manner, treating the processes as respectfully as possible. Examples include growing legumes and wild species of flowers and shrubs in order to provide food for the entire chain. they base us on the lunar calendar to optimize (bio-dynamic) the natural treatments we use in the vineyard, such as compost and herbal infusions.

The wine press is unanimous in its praise for the wines of this iconic house. Wines getting points close to the maximum limit of 100 points is standard rather than exceptional. Supply from the relatively small stamp vineyards is very limited and the storage potential of the wines is unprecedentedly long.
