Description
Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira in the Alentejo region. This is one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal. In the beautiful Alentejo, Herdade do Sobroso has a perfect location with its vineyards located on the banks of the Guadiana River and its tributary the Rio dos Patos or the River of the Ducks. The trademark is the ducks on the labels. It is the perfect setting for the ripening of the grapes and few vineyards have this luxury and this partly explains why this winery can make very beautiful wines because there is never any water debt. In addition to the fact that there is sufficient water, this region is the only one within the Alentejo that has the influence of the ocean, which ensures healthy ripening.
The Grande Reserva is the pride of Herdade do Sobroso and is a blend of the Alicante Boushet & Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The Sobroso Grande Reserva is a true terroir wine with a focus on the maximum expression of the unique terroir of Herdade do Sobroso next to the banks of the Guadiana River, where the vineyards are located.
The best grapes have been carefully selected, which, after a gentle fermentation, are fermented in stainless steel open-air barrels with controlled temperatures, after which the wine is allowed to mature for at least 18 months in new French oak barrels, followed by a further bottle aging of at least 6 months before the wine becomes available. . Only between 6000-7000 bottles of these wines are made and they are only released in the top years. The bottles are numbered.
In the glass, the Grande Reserva has a dark, fresh, red color and shows the wine as it is: powerful and refined. The wine has red fruits such as cherry and currant, but also dark fruits such as ripe blackberries. We also smell and taste leather, espresso, vanilla and pencil shavings. In the mouth the wine is full bodied, fresh with firm yet soft tannins and the aftertaste is long and very elegant. This is a real pleasure wine and a gastronomic all-rounder, so the Grande Reserva is an excellent accompaniment to traditional Portuguese meat dishes or with mature cheeses, but also delicious with a beautifully matured Rib Eye.

The 2016 Tinto Grande Reserva is an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Alicante Bouschet aged for 18 months in new 500-liter French barrels. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. Lush but fairly powerful, this has both intensity of flavor and tannins. The tannins aren't too astringent, though, which makes this at least theoretically possible to drink now. That would be a bad idea, though, as this could really use a couple of years in the cellar to integrate its parts and smooth out. It has at least some mid-palate finesse—it is never overly jammy. It is focused and finishes with grip and flavor. This is nicely done, and it may yet improve. It's a fine value too.
