Description
A FIRST - AVAILABLE AROUND DECEMBER 24, 2024
The Fontodi 'Flaccianello della Pieve' is vinified from 100% Sangiovese, these grapes come from the oldest plots of the estate and have undergone a strict selection. There are 6,000 vines per hectare that are cared for according to the Guyot pruning method. The wine was fermented in stainless steel, whereby the process proceeded naturally without the addition of foreign yeasts. The malolactic fermentation took place in barriques. For the maturation, which took 18 months, new barriques made of Allier and Troncais oak were chosen. A fresh and penetrating wine. The aromas of various dark fruits increase as the wine has been exposed to air for longer. A great length, warm and pure with a nice balance. Nice potential. The Flaccianello has a ruby red color with intense fruity aromas of plums and cherries, violets and vanilla. Full and juicy taste thanks to the soft tannins. The finish is complex with impressions of cocoa, tobacco and fruit.
Famous wine critics like Robert Parker and Antonio Galloni stumble over superlatives to describe this Flaccianello della Pieve. And they are right, because it is an impressive wine that effortlessly meets all the criteria of balance, length, intensity and complexity. Seductively rich in many flavors, velvety soft on the tongue but never too heavy. Every sip makes you want more and that is exactly what Manetti and his team had in mind with this masterful creation. Only a few bottles are made each year and the demand is high, so seize your chance to get this iconic wine from Chianti. It can easily age for decades, if you can restrain yourself and wait until the right moment to open it.

The Fontodi 2021 Flaccianello della Pieve opens to a medium-dark inky appearance and solid aromas of black fruit and pressed blackberry. The Flaccianello is a touch more accessible at this early stage compared to the Vigna del Sorbo, but both wines are undoubtedly built to withstand ample cellar aging. Flaccianello is the more powerful or the two, and the Vigna del Sorbo is more delicate in comparison. These dueling character traits are especially evident in this classic 2021 vintage. This wine also boasts a more generous mouthfeel supported by softly integrated tannins.
Giovanni Manetti and his family have produced an excellent set of new wines that elegantly interpret the 2021 vintage. My favorite of the bunch is the 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Panzano Vigna del Sorbo, which has a very slight edge over the Flaccianello della Pieve, in my view.

From: Chianti Classico: The Magnificent 2021s (Jul 2024)
The 2021 Flaccianello della Pieve is another exceptional wine from Fontodi this year. Ripe, silky tannins wrap around a core of dark fruit as the 2021 makes its presence felt from the first taste. Sumptuous, racy and dense, this is just magnificent. As has been the case for some time, Flaccianello is a blend of mostly three parcels throughout the estate but closer to town.
- By Antonio Galloni on June 2024
Proprietor Giovanni Manetti and his son Bernardo presented a stunning set of 2021s on my most recent visit. The wines embody the essence of site but in the more refined, nuanced style that is such a signature here today. Picking a bit earlier while also reducing French oak imprint has made a huge difference. I can’t recommend these new releases highly enough.
As for Giovanni Manetti, he continues to lead the way in Chianti Classico by making brilliant wines while also uniting producers around a vision for the region in his role as two-term President of the Consorzio del Chianti Classico. These are exceptionally rare qualities in any individual, but to see them in one person is impressive.

The Azienda Agricola Fontodi is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico area, south of the town of Panzano. This region has been famous for viticulture for centuries, thanks to the unique combination of elevated cultivation areas, lime and loam soil, lots of sun hours and the fantastic microclimate: warm and dry and with a big difference between day and night temperature.
Fontodi has been in the possession of the Manetti family since 1968, who is advised by the renowned oenologist Franco Bernabei. The Fontodi winery now has an organic certificate and is 130 ha. large, of which about 70 are planted with grapes. In the center of the winery grows the Sangiovese, which Giovanni and Marco Manetti have developed to breathtaking perfection. There are also French grape varieties such as Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Just like so many big names at the top of wine growing, Fontodi has applied the fruitful combination between organic cultivation and the most modern cellar technology and has therefore become one of the most sustainable wineries in Tuscany. To date, Fontodi wines have brought in 19 times the coveted three glasses of the Italian wine bible Gambero Rosso. Fontodi is undisputedly one of the 10 best wineries in Tuscany! In the last 17 editions of the Gambero Rosso it has received a score of 'Tre Bicchieri' no less than 13 times. The highest possible.
