ABOUT DOMAINE HUMBERT FRÈRES
Brothers Emmanuel (Manou) and Frédéric Humbert are the fourth generation of wine producers at the Humbert family estate. They took over the domain from their parents in 1989 and since then they have steadily improved the quality of their wine. Their wines are highly sought after and excel in harmony and balance. . Emmanuel is the dynamic force behind this domain: a thoughtful and passionate man with a great love for wine, food and rugby. Ten years ago, the Humbert brothers switched roles with Manou moving to the winery and Frédéric to the vineyard, and they haven't looked back since. Manou, a larger-than-life, rugby-playing winemaker, brings clear definition to his wines. There is noticeable clarity between the brothers' many terroirs in Fixin and Gevrey-Chambertin, impressive precision indeed. Read more in the Tab: Wijhuis
ABOUT Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
With no less than 28 hectares planted with vines, this region is the largest of the nine Grands Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. Like all good wine, it starts in the vineyard, where the vines are planted on east-facing slopes of clay and limestone and the grapes receive optimal sunlight and drain quickly. Pinot Noir is the only permitted grape here; despite this limitation, the region is still known for producing some of the world's most renowned wines. Pinot Noir lovers will lose themselves in the aromatic aromas and flavors of spices, red fruits, game and mint, all of which are supported by a noticeable structure. Due to the high acidity and high tannins, the wine must be aged for at least six to eight years before opening. If you have the patience, ten to fifteen years would be even better. Some bottles can be found for as little as $200, a bargain for a Grand Cru Burgundy wine. Combine with equally aromatic dishes such as lamb or coq au vin.

From: Red Burgundy '16 & '15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)
(the Humberts' 55-year-old vines are located in the top part of Mazoyères, and were virtually unscathed by the frost event in 2016): Deep, saturated ruby-red. Sexy, wild aromas of black raspberry, smoke and game. Very suave and smooth in the mouth, with its intense black raspberry fruit complicated by hints of torrefaction and animal fur. Mouthfilling, velvety and round but firm too, finishing with substantial fine-grained tannins and an impression of power.

Emmanuel Humbert, who runs this small family domain with his brother Frédéric, told me that he has preferred 2016 to 2015 from the beginning “for its great impression of acidity.” His vineyards in or close to the Combe de Lavaut benefited from fresh acidity but crop levels were also seriously reduced by the late-April frost. The Humberts started harvesting on September 26, with potential alcohol levels between 11% and 11.5%, chaptalizing about 1.5%. Emmanuel begins his winemaking regimen with a cold soak lasting five to seven days, then does one pigeage per day for the first seven to ten days of the fermentation. In ’16, Humbert vinified his crus with about 15% whole clusters and aged the wines entirely in new oak. They were still in barrels at the time of my tasting, but Humbert planned to assemble them in tanks about ten days before bottling them in mid-February.
The Humberts, who are typically among the earliest pickers in Gevrey-Chambertin and are known for their precise wines (Emmanuel noted that he would much rather chaptalize than pick too late and lose acidity), made dense, rich ‘15s that nonetheless maintain their shape. They were surprisingly easy to taste in January, and Emmanuel pointed out that wines bottled without fining or filtration are less likely to shut down in the period after the bottling.

On the domain, the emphasis is on manual working methods, including ploughing, green harvesting, if necessary, thinning of leaves and bunches. The grapes undergo a cool maceration of several days before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. Over-extraction and too firm tannins are always avoided. All wines mature in Burgundy oak barrels from the forests around Châtillon. 50% new oak for all wines, except for the grand cru Charmes-Chambertin, which is aged on 100% new oak.
