Description
Cloudy Bay is New Zealand's wine reference and the most internationally renowned brand. It is one of the five first wineries from Marlborough, New Zealand's best wine region (at the northernmost tip of the South Island). and owes its name to the 'Cloudy Bay' to the east, which Captain Cook discovered. As a pioneer, Cloudy Bay has definitely put the Marlborough wine region on the map. Marlborough's cool, maritime climate alternates with plenty of sunshine. Long sunny days and cool nights provide beautiful scents and power in the taste.
The emperor or empress among Cloudy Bay wines is the Te Koko. The Sauvignon Blanc grapes come from a very old vineyard. As with very old vineyards, the yield is often very low but the quality is extremely good. For this reason, very old vineyards are often replaced by young vines that give a higher production, but fortunately not with these vineyards located in Rapaura, Brancott and Renwick because they produce high-quality grapes that are used for this Te Koko. The grapes for this wine come from four Cloudy Bay vineyards and are picked at night for optimal fruit intensity. In addition, this Te Koko has had a long wood aging of 12 months and this produces a full, thick, somewhat oily wine, but with beautiful acids, beautiful (citrus) fruit, jasmine flowers and sweet herbs and hints of ginger. In the mouth the wine is full bodied, creamy on the palate and the aftertaste is very subtle but present smoky oak and a hint of vanilla.
FACT: The wine is in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you pick up the wine you will often receive a nice discount. You will see your discount immediately when you choose 'Collect' on the checkout page. We are located in Dordrecht with plenty of parking. Click here for our address.

As more wineries have adopted this style of Sauvignon Blanc, Te Koko isn't the standout wine it once was. That doesn't mean it's not still excellent. The 2015 Te Koko offers pungency and passion fruit on the nose, followed by a wine of great concentration and intensity. Hints of struck flint add complexity, while the mouth-filling palate boasts a rich, multilayered texture and a lingering finish. Only 8% aged in new French oak and about a third of the wine went through malolactic fermentation, leaving it with crisp acids and a great sense of elegance and balance.
The team at Cloudy Bay has streamlined the lineup to just three varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. About 70% of the overall production is Sauvignon Blanc, with 10% each devoted to sparkling wine, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Pelorus sparkling wines seem reinvigorated, simultaneously richer, nuttier and fresher, while the Chardonnay continues to be an under-the-radar success story. I often prefer it to the Sauvignon Blanc. In 2014, the company purchased a vineyard in Northburn, Central Otago, which will eventually form the core of its Te Wahi Pinot Noir. That project is still a work in progress, and while I expect that wine will eventually surpass the Pinot Noir made in Marlborough, for the moment I prefer the Marlborough bottling, which shows more detail and elegance. Stay tuned.
