Description
Weingut Stift Göttweig is known as one of the oldest wineries in Austria. As a Benedictine abbey, Stift Göttweig was founded in the year 1083 by Altmann van Passau (also known as Saint Altmann). Since that time, the abbey has always played an important role in the development of wine production in the Wachau Valley. Stift Göttweig is located among the rolling countryside on the south bank of the Danube opposite the town of Krems at 449 meters above sea level. Because of this location and the abbey, the winery is also called the Austrian Montecassino. The Benedictines were responsible for the administration and management until 1988, after which the property was rented out until 2005. Since 2006, winegrower Fritz Miesbauer and his team have been reliving history on the Stift Göttweig estate.
The name Gottschelle probably refers to the word "goetschen" which is a local word for the sharp edge of a mountain ridge. The vineyard was first mentioned in the year 1341. The soil of the Ried Gottschelle consists of gravel, lime and loess deposits, which have a particularly positive effect on the Grüner Veltliner grapes that grow here. Weingut Stift Göttweig cultivates in this vineyard 3.69 hectares of old grüner Veltliner between 15 and 35 years old. As soon as the grapes are perfectly ripe, they are selected and harvested entirely by hand, so that only the very best grapes from Ried Gottschelle end up as the special Stift Göttweig Grüner Veltliner Ried Gottschelle. Once the selection has taken place, the pressing and alcoholic fermentation begins on its lees, after which the wine is allowed to age for another 7 months in large wooden barrels.
A delicious wine with smoked fish/poultry and oriental dishes. In the glass, the ried gottschelle is dry, full and elegant. on the nose ripe yellow apple, pear, tropical fruit with a hint of saffron. On the palate mineral, lemon, juicy wild peach. Structured, salty freshness. Finishing with a long finish and a very pleasant bitterness.

The 2019 Ried Gottschelle 1ÖTW Kremstal Grüner Veltliner is from mighty loess soils partly intermingled with gravels. The wine starts with an intensely aromatic bouquet of ripe and super ripe fruits intermingled with fine and spicy stony notes. Full-bodied, round and rich yet also refined and salty, with fully ripe and partly tropical fruit aromas on the palate (pineapples and peaches but also potted pears and more white fruits), this is a full-bodied if not even mighty yet elegant and minerally fresh Veltliner with stimulating grip and a long, forceful finish. 14.5% alcohol. Tasted at Schloss Gobelsburg in June 2021. 93 2021-2040
