Schloss Johannisberg has its vineyards in the beautiful Rheingau. In general, the wines from the Rheingau are even more refined, with character and firmer in taste than the wines from Rheinhessen and Rheinpfalz. One of the most beautiful wineries in the Rheingau is without a doubt Schloss Johannisberg. Schloss Johannisberg in the Rheingau is undoubtedly Germany's most prestigious wine estate and world renowned for its Rieslings. It is the oldest Riesling winery in the world. It has been made since 817 and since 1720 100% Riesling has been produced. The winery is centrally located in the area and has a rich history. Originally it was a monastery that was later used as a castle. It was even once owned by our royal family. The wines are the most elegant of the Rheingau area and gain in balance and suppleness as they age. Since 1748, a few bottles have been kept in the beautiful wine cellar, so that a unique collection has now been built up. Once every 25 years, the wines are inspected and provided with new corks. And, it is assured, even the oldest white wines are still very drinkable!
The Schloss Johannisberg Rotlack Riesling Kabinett Trocken has a bright lemon yellow color. Intense aromas of grated lime zest, green apple, gooseberry and nettle. On the palate, attractive, juicy fruit component with firm solid mineral structure and well integrated acidity. This beautiful Kabinett of Schloss Johannisberg has received no less than 90/100 Parker points and has a drinking window until at least 2030.

The 2019 Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Trocken Bronzelack is clear and aromatic on the super ripe and tropical-scented nose with aromas of mango, honeydew melon, a touch of honey, caramelized fruit and the aristocratic mineral tone of the Schloss Johannisberger terroir. Elegant and refined on the palate, this is a round yet quite pure and finessed Riesling with stimulating and lingering salinity on the grippy finish. Tasted in June 2020.
To be or not to be—that shouldn't be the question when it comes to topping the excellent Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Grosses Gewächs Silberlack with a corresponding Goldlack. A wine topping the GG? This isn’t really the idea of the VDP classification, which allows only one dry "grand cru" from each single vineyard. Yet since the Schloss Johannisberger is only one vineyard that is divided into different plots, like the châteaux vineyards in Bordeaux, the domain has produced a wide range of different styles from dry to noble sweet wines for ages. Each style wears its own cap color, and with the GG being introduced with a silver cap years ago, it was clear that a gold cap had to follow. So, here it comes: the yet-to-be-released 2017 Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Goldlack is this year’s highlight at Schloss Johannisberg (well, I still need to taste the higher, sweeter predicates from the 2019 vintage...). Vinified in traditional oak for 30 months and bottled in April this year, the 2017 is one of the finest dry Rheingau Rieslings I have tasted this year. It is a structured, multi-layered and tensioned "grand cru" with the estate-typical flintiness, finesse and persistent elegance. The Goldlack is a great new entry into the multicolored Schloss Johannisberger Riesling range and a new icon wine for the entire Rheingau region.
It was Stefan Doktor’s idea to produce a wine more in the old, traditional style of the château, whose historic cellar ("bibliotheca subterranea") is world famous and has hosted countless great Schloss Johannisberger Rieslings for 900 years. In the old days, the Rieslings were aged for more than just a year, depending on the vintage, the style and the quality, before they were bottled or released. Doktor, Lord Of The Keys to the subterranean wine library, wanted to revive this tradition and started a test in 2017. When it came to the blending of the stück vats for the Silberlack Grosses Gewächs, which is a blend of 80% Langenberg and 20% Nonnenhöll and Mäuerchen quer, he decided to keep one 1,200-liter stück for a longer aging. The wine was racked from the full lees in spring like the Silberlack GG (both wines underwent the malolactic fermentation yet not to the end), yet not bottled but aged for another two years in another stück in the bibliotheca subterranea. The wine showed so well in spring this year that was filtered and bottled. It’s not a spectacularly rich or full-bodied wine but, if I may say so, the real grand cru of Schloss Johannisberg. The Goldlack is deeper, more complex and more tensioned than the Grosses Gewächs and comes along like its reserve wine. The 2017 Goldlack sells for 99 euros pre-release right now and should be released in autumn this year for a price that has not yet been fixed. For Rheingau classic aficionados, cellaring at least a few bottles of the 2017 should be obligatory. The wine is spectacular in its tension, finesse and elegant complexity and I can’t imagine 2018 could be better. The Goldlack opens a new chapter in the history of one of Germany’s most famous Riesling domains and will be produced only in outstanding years such as 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Schloss Johannisberg bottles "Qualitätswein" under a label with a yellow seal. The Qualitätsweine mit Prädikat (quality wines with special properties) are classified as follows: Rotlach for the medium quality cabinet wines, Orangelach for the best cabinet wines, Grünlach for the average Spätlesen, Weisslach for the large Spätlesen, Rosalach for the Auslesen, Blaulach for the best qualities Auslese and Goldlach for the Beeren- and Trockenbeerenauslesen. Bad years do not deliver superior quality wine; The Auslesen with sky blue seal and the Beerenauslesen with gold seal will therefore not be found. Sometimes a sparkling wine is made from the lighter and less good Riesling wine, which is sold under the name Fürst von Metternich Prädikats-Sekt.
