Description
This Faiveley Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru comes from a premier cur vineyard located in the village of Nuits-Saint Georges and this is smack in the middle of the famous Côte de Nuits AOC, separating the 41 Premier Cru vineyards that make up the region is effectively divided into two groups: north versus south. Wines from the north tend to exhibit bright red fruit and floral aromas and flavors, while those from the south offer more black fruit, earth-driven, larger tannic wines. This appellation also shares a highly coveted border: across the border you could have one foot in Vosne-Romanée and one foot in Nuits-Saint-Georges.
The soil of the Damodes vineyard consists of brown gravel and is very calcareous. The name 'Les Damodes' could come from a female trinity that watches over the good of the earth, or it could refer to the female druids who settled in this place. The total area of the appellation is 8ha55a and of this 81a owned by Domaine Faiveley. The vineyards are oriented to the east. The vines were planted in 1983 and 1989. On the nose, the Faiveley Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru has aromas of cassis, plums, orange peel and new oak. On the palate, this Burgundy is medium to full bodied and is an intense and lively wine with a concentrated core of fruit, framed by powdery tannins. Finishing with a long, mineral finish, this is another great wine.
The history of Domaine Faiveley dates back to 1825. The domain has been family owned for 7 generations and is located in Nuits-Saint-Georges, in the heart of Burgundy. 127 hectares of vineyards, spread over Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise, of which 12 vineyards with Grand Cru classification, 25 with Premier Cru classification and 6 vineyards with a “Monopole” classification. The domain is managed by Erwan Faiveley, who manages the work in the vineyards in-house to have control over the quality of the grapes. The hand-picked harvest is carefully brought to vaulted cellars from the 19th century, located in Nuits-Saint-Georges. To create great Burgundies, Erwan Faiveley combines the principles of modern oenology with traditional aging in French oak barrels. All this contributes to the high reputation of Faiveley wines.

Aromas of cassis, plums, orange rind and spicy new oak preface Faiveley's 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes, a medium to full-bodied, deep and lively wine with a concentrated core of fruit, framed by powdery tannins. Concluding with a long, mineral finish, it's another fine bottling from this cool, high-altitude and northeast-exposed site.
Jérôme Flous told me that Faiveley began picking on September 9, finishing by the 20th, and that yields averaged out at around 35 hectoliters per hectare in white and a little less in red. Comparing the 2019 vintage to "a more concentrated version of 2010," he admires—as I do—its vibrant fruit tones and refined tannins, finding it more elegant than 2018. The quality of the red wines chez Faiveley is old news, and for more information on this firm's evolution I direct readers to my report published in the August 2020 Week 1 issue of The Wine Advocate. It's worth underlining, however, how good the whites are these days: Flous tells me that he now includes fûts from Damy and Chassin in the white wine barrel program, and in the last few vintages, I've found the wines' new oak component better and better integrated.

From: Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)
The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru showed some reduction on the nose, but there is plenty of fruit here. The palate is medium-bodied, quite elegant and pure, smooth in texture with a discrete pinch of white pepper and allspice towards the finish. I like this manner in which this builds in the mouth. Juicy and mouthfilling.

The 0.81ha vineyard for these grapes is at the top of the hill, resulting in very cool conditions for the vines. This terroir produces a spicy, vivacious wine with notes of cassis and mulberry, accented with smoke and new leather. The 2020 vintage was aged half in new casks and half in two-year-old barrels to give a wine with plenty of finesse and high-toned elegance, yet one that in no way lacks solid ‘Nuits’ character.
