A magnificent chenin that’s broad, precise, dense and vibrant. The nose shows notes of oranges, grilled grapefruit, dried lemons, mild spices and linden. Medium-bodied with bright acidity. Agile and lively, with tension at the center and an attractive texture on the palate. Plenty of vitality and focus, with a long finish. Drink or hold.

The 2020 Anjou Blanc Quarts is a powerful, intense style without being heavy—smoky, spiced and flinty. It has the nervousness and energy of a jittery foal, but it's got what it takes to be a stallion, possessing athleticism and muscle within its compact core. Flavor-wise, there's just-ripe plum freshly picked off the tree, alongside honey and exotic spice. Innate sinew draws this out on the long finish. If I were an Amazon algorithm, I'd say, “If you like toasty, smoky Grand Cru white Burgundy, come have a look over here.”

Ivan Massonnat’s Belargus has arrived on the Anjou scene with a bang. A newcomer to the Loire Valley, Belargus is making waves with his modern approach to wine marketing and communication and his no-expense-spared, unapologetic interpretation of the Anjou terroir. Belargus has taken on the estate formerly owned by Jo Pithon, renamed it, and now has a collection of stellar Chenin vineyards from around the area known as Anjou Noir, a land of schist, including ten hectares across the Quarts de Chaume and Chaume Grand Crus. The vines are farmed biodynamically and hand-harvested over several picks before the fruit is whole bunch pressed and allowed to ferment naturally in 400-liter oak barrels. The wines are mainly dry, but as nature permits, botrytized sweet wines are also created, encouraged by the morning mists off the Layon, a tributary of the Loire River.
In 2018, some of the whites were a touch oaky due to new barrels, and while oak continues to play an important part in these wines, improved integration is evident. There’s no doubting the ambition here, but with only three vintages to go on, you have to be careful that you don’t declare it the next big thing just in case it’s the Emperor’s New Clothes, but the historic sites and the high quality of the wines seems to suggest this is the real deal. When it comes to current vintages, look to drink the 2020s before the 2019s. The 2019s are firm and powerful (no malolactic conversion occurred in 2019), whereas the 2020s are a lot more open. As a result, the domaine has decided to release the 2020s before the 2019s as a result.
The 2020s have been released before the firm and powerful 2019s (no malolactic conversion occurred in 2019). While a couple of the 2020s, Veau and Rucheres, are more open and impressive in concentration and have a spicy, schistous nature, they also show the season's warmth with their elevated alcohol levels. There’s also a curious, rare release of a sweet Savennières from Belargus: the 2022 Clos Pourri. While most of the focus is on dry Savennières, sweet whites are a part of its history and are permitted under appellation law. The Clos Pourri is interesting to taste for its rarity value but isn’t particularly exciting unlike the 2021 Quarts. It is a splendid example of what the Loire's only Grand Cru can do when it's allowed to shine. However, only 180 liters of this sweet wine were made, so I imagine it’ll be nearly impossible to find a bottle.
