Description
The 2020 Petrus has retained its opaque purple-black color after bottling, foreshadowing the seemingly frozen glacial pace at which this wine continues. It opens very reluctantly, requires a lot of air with vigorous rolling and after a few hours this giant of a wine awakens. As it eventually unfolds, it slowly transforms into a powerful, fantastically clean nose of preserved plums, blackberry preserves and blueberry compote, followed by nuances of molten licorice, dark chocolate, black truffles, iron ore and, even later, floral notions of lilacs and rose oil. On the palate the wine is tight, muscular with many, many layers of perfectly ripe black and blue fruit, exotic herbs and earthy notions for which words simply fail. It will take a good 8-10 years to get going, then it's very likely to outlast us all, but you should make sure you drink this one before you go.
This Peter also comes directly from the Chateau. We always buy all our wines from importers or chateaus so that authenticity can be checked and that we can be sure that these wines are always stored in good conditions. We only deliver this wine in the Netherlands. For foreign customers you can opt for Pick-up (collect yourself or by a courier of your choice).

As I observed to Olivier Berrouet, it's hardly very original to find a wine critic extolling the virtues of this Pomerol reference point; and yet, whether one likes it or not, there's no denying that the 2020 Pétrus is a brilliant achievement and indeed one of the very finest vintages at this address over the last two decades. Unwinding in the glass with a deep bouquet of dark berries, cherries and cassis mingled with hints of exotic spices, violets and vine smoke, it's full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with huge depth at the core, exquisitely refined tannins and a youthfully reserved, even restrained profile despite its power and size. This serious, classically proportioned Pétrus is a monument in the making.

From: Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)
The 2020 Pétrus is a wine of pure and total sensuality. Silky, creamy tannins wrap around a core of dark red and black fruit. A wine with explosive depth but no hard edges and mind-blowing balance, the 2020 is so alluring, even in the early going. Time in the glass brings out lifted floral top notes that add freshness. What strikes most is the elegance of the tannins. I don't think I have ever tasted a young Pétrus like the 2020. Technical Director Olivier Berrouet gave the 2020 a bit more time on the skins than is normal. Aging was 17-18 months in oak. Let's cut to the chase. The 2020 Pétrus is profoundly great.

Château Pétrus is owned by the Moueix family and is located in Pomerol (Bordeaux). Château Pétrus makes the most famous merlot wine in the world! The vineyard with its 11.5 hectares is small but fine, and is planted with 95% merlot and 5% cabernet franc vines with an average age of 45 years. The soil consists of ferrous clay.
The Moueix family also owns Château La Fleur-Pétrus, Lagrange, Trotanoy, Hosanna (all Pomerol) and Château Magdeleine (Saint-Émilion). The grape pickers from all these domains jointly wait for the most favorable weather conditions, after which they all go to the Château Petrus vineyard and harvest within 1 to 2 days. The average annual production is only 2,500 boxes of 12 bottles - actually too little for the demand for these wines. The wines of Pétrus are among the most expensive, and also among the richest and most luxurious wines of Bordeaux. The fantastic taste experience is derived from the terroir, the excellent grape and the magnificent care by the team of Château Pétrus.
