Description
The famous Adrianna vineyard in Gualtallary is perhaps the most studied vineyard in the world and is Catena's best vineyard for Malbec. The vineyard is located at a respectable altitude of 1480 meters. Only in this part (altitude and plot) can the Malbec vine absorb the optimum amount of nutrients, which ensures that this absolute grandcru among the Adriannas is remarkably expressive and distinctive. Since 2011, high-end Adriannas have been produced under the names: Adrianna Mundus Bacillus Terrae, Adrianna Fortuna Terrae and Adrianna River Stones.
The Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae is lively and vibrant, beautifully structured and surprisingly fresh. The creamy and milky note when opening the (much too young bottle - this is almost baby murder) disappeared after some time in the glass and made way for fresher notes, almost citrus. At Catena Zapata they also made a selection of individual plants. They used a high percentage of full bunches and fermented it in concrete with indigenous yeasts and matured it for 18 months in used oak barrels. This must be one of the finest vintages for the Mundus Bacillus Terrae.

Bodega Catena Zapata is seen as the flagship of the wineries in Argentina. Robert Parker's statement says a lot: 'when all is said and done, Catena Zapata is the Argentina winery of reference, the standard of excellence'. The Mundus Bacillus Terrae and the Nicolas are the top wines and these 2 are not distributed via the regular importers but are distributed via the Place du Bordeaux where wine can happily be purchased.

Tasting the 2020 Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae next to the 2019 showed a different aromatic profile of darker fruit, denoting ripeness and sun. The wine was still very young with a luxurious, creamy texture and mouthfeel. 2020 was an extremely dry year (70% lower than the average with just 282 liters!), and the grapes were picked two to three weeks earlier. It has a bright, saturated color and a heady nose with ripe berries and a spicy, smoky twist from 19 months in oak vats. It's medium to full bodied, with a soft texture and velvety tannins, sleek and seamless. 5,700 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021.
Some of the vineyards from Catena are suffering from phylloxera, and parts of some vineyards have to be grubbed up and replanted.

From: Argentina on the Couch: Malbec, Terroir and Other Trends (Nov 2021)
The 2020 Malbec Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae hails from a small parcel of a vineyard in Gualtallary, Uco Valley and was barrel-aged for 18 months. Dark purple in the glass. The expressive, layered nose delivers notes of blackberry, plum, lavender and violet with a pinch of herbs. Intense and concentrated but agile in feel, the palate is taut, while the fine-grained, chalky tannins are enlivened by the acidity, which teases out the lovely ripe flavors toward the end. This is a substantial but juicy red, everything you’d want from a high altitude wine.

The leading house Catena Zapata has been active in Argentinian viticulture for 4 generations. Bodega Catena Zapata was founded by Nicola Catena who left Italy by sailing ship to Argentina in 1898. He eventually ended up in Mendoza and planted his first vineyard here in 1902 with the grape variety Malbec. His son, Domingo, inherited the winery and realized his father's dream of becoming one of the greatest vineyard owners in Mendoza.
In the 1960s, the winery went through a difficult period due to the poor economy and rising inflation. Nicolás Catena, Domingo's son with an economics degree, took over in the mid-1960s and concentrated on expanding distribution in Argentina. He sold the table wine producing winery and kept only Bodegas Esmeralda, the winery of fine wines.
Argentina was known at the time as a bulk wine producing country and Nicolás was therefore considered crazy. But he insisted on looking for the best locations to plant vineyards, including in Gualtallary at high altitudes. In the 1980s he started to plant the grape varieties Chardonnay and Malbec. According to his own vineyard manager, the latter grape would never ripen here, but fortunately for Nicolás he did.
It took him five years before he was completely satisfied with the Malbec grape in the 60-year-old Angélica vineyard for the production of the Catena Malbec in 1994. A little later he started producing the Catena Alta wines, from the best plots. from its vineyards. He also grew many clones of the Malbec and managed to find the most suitable vineyard for each of them.
In the late 90s he started making some top cuvées which he called Catena Zapata (after the name of his mother Angélica Zapata). These wines are produced exclusively in exceptionally good years. Bodega Catena Zapata produces five different lines, mostly from vineyards at an altitude of 900 meters or more: Catena Zapata, Catena Alta, Catena, Alamos and Argento.
