How does this wine taste?

How full and heavy the wine feels in your mouth, like the difference between skimmed milk and cream. More alcohol, sugar and oak ageing make a wine fuller.

The drying, grippy feel on your gums and tongue, as with strong tea. It comes from the skins and seeds of black grapes and from oak, and softens with age.

How much sugar you taste, from dry to sweet. Fruity is not the same as sweet: a dry wine can taste of ripe fruit.

How fresh and juicy the wine is: acidity makes your mouth water. High acidity tastes lively and refreshing, low acidity soft and round.

The Harlan family has been winemakers in California's Napa Valley since the late 1970s. Their first venture, Harlan Estate, has established an international benchmark for the art of viticulture over the course of nearly four decades. It was in those early years, in the early 1980s, that H. William Harlan discovered another place—an isolated area—while hiking along the southwest ridge of Oakville. The hidden expanse deeply touched him but remained elusive until much later, when the Harlan family finally acquired it in 2008. During this time, the second generations of both the family and the winemaking team came together to explore and work with the land, and they began making discoveries of their own. At the heart of this wild terrain, they found a powerful geological convergence that had shaped the steep, rugged topography of the land and created the conditions for a truly exotic winegrowing environment. Over time, they discovered that the dramatic landscape—just beyond the edge of the known—would slowly transform them and eventually inspire a new venture: Promontory. Eleven hectares of the original vineyard have been preserved due to the interesting age of these Cabernets. Another 16 hectares are still being replanted plot by plot.

Promontory wines may only be offered to private customers and the hospitality industry. You can find a helpful presentation about Promontory in the Appendix tab.

For your information, Promontory has won two major awards (BWW Competition 2021)

Jeb Dunnuck gave 100/100.
“Lastly, the 2019 Promontory matches the perfect 2016 from this estate and is legendary stuff. Ripe black fruits, chocolate, lead pencil shaving, roasted herbs, and tobacco are just some of its nuances, and this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, concentrated mid-palate, ultra-fine tannins, and an incredible finish. It doesn't get any better. This has the class of a First Growth from Bordeaux paired with a Napa sense of texture and fruit. It will evolve for 40-50 years”.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown gift 100/100.
“The 2019 Promontory has a deep garnet-purple color. It is quite closed at the moment, needing a little swirling to reveal notes of crushed rocks, garrigue, iron ore, and lavender, leading to a core of black cherries, redcurrant jelly, and fresh blackcurrants, with a hint of mossy tree bark. The medium to full-bodied palate is so tightly wound, delivering multi-layered black and red berries with mineral and earthy sparks, supported by fine-grained tannins, finishing long and fragrant”.

James Suckling gave 99/100.
“Purple-fruit, dark-licorice and conifer aromas follow through to a medium to full body with firmness and a linear flow that goes on for minutes. Racy tannins and focus. Give this until at least 2028”.

Wine Advocate gave 97/100.
“The 2019 Promontory offers up slightly darker cherries than the red-fruited 2018, couched in a bed of foresty-minty notes and underpinned by crushed stone. At this stage, it looks more intense but otherwise similar to the excellent 2018, finishing long, silky and elegant, with mouthwatering freshness. Collectors should enjoy comparing the two years for decades to come”.

The Harlan family has been winegrowers in California's Napa Valley since the late 1970s. Their first effort, Harlan Estate, has established an international benchmark for the art of viticulture over the course of nearly four decades.
