The 2024 Domaine Weinbach Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg is a dry Grand Cru Riesling from one of the absolute reference estates of Alsace. In an extremely challenging year, Weinbach managed to produce a wine with impressive tension, precision, and aging potential precisely on the steep granite slopes of Schlossberg.

Domaine Weinbach

For many wine lovers, Domaine Weinbach is, without exaggeration, the benchmark estate of Alsace. For more than a century, the winery has belonged to the absolute world elite and is regarded as one of the most respected producers of dry Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris.

The wines combine an almost Burgundian finesse with an impressive expression of the terroir and consistently rank among the finest produced in Alsace. The Grand Crus from Domaine Weinbach are produced annually in only very limited quantities and are beloved worldwide by collectors and enthusiasts.

Grand Cru Schlossberg

Schlossberg was the first officially recognized Grand Cru of Alsace and is regarded as one of the greatest Riesling terroirs in the world. The steep slopes consist of granite-rich soils with excellent natural drainage. It is precisely this combination that produces Rieslings with precision, tension, mineral depth, and exceptional aging potential.

The Weinbach wines from Schlossberg, in particular, are among the absolute icons of Alsace. In 2024, this terroir appears to have benefited optimally from its granite soil and perfect drainage.

The 2024 volume

The Domaine Weinbach 2024 Grand Crus will be released in the coming months and are available from us as a premiere. For winemakers, 2024 was one of the most challenging vintages of the past few decades. A wet growing season with enormous disease pressure demanded the utmost from the vineyards and the Weinbach team.

As Eddy Leiber-Faller himself aptly described it: 2024 was a season to forget, but a vintage to remember. It was precisely in the steep Grand Cru vineyards, where the granite soils ensure perfect natural drainage, that wines emerged with impressive tension, precision, and exceptional aging potential.

The international wine press is therefore full of praise. The combination of fresh acidity, perfect ripeness, and a pristine terroir expression makes 2024 a classic Riesling vintage that will develop brilliantly over the coming decades.

Scent, taste and character

The 2024 Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg opens refinedly with aromas of mirabelle plum, lemon, lemon blossom, and lime zest. This is followed by a pronounced stony minerality that points directly to the granite soils of Schlossberg.

On the palate, the wine is slender, clear, and particularly precise. The ripeness is beautifully rounded but is supported by a lively, perfectly integrated acidity. Citrus, white flowers, and wet granite come together in a wine that is simultaneously refined, energetic, and very long.

The finish is tight, briny, and mineral, with an impressive tension of lemon zest and stony freshness. This is a dry Riesling of tremendous precision and an aging potential of decades.

Drinking window and food and wine pairings

The 2024 Domaine Weinbach Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg drinks beautifully from around 2028 and develops effortlessly until at least 2058.

Preferably serve the wine at 9 to 11°C.

This dry Grand Cru Riesling pairs excellently with oysters, langoustines, scallops, turbot, sushi, sashimi, ceviche, Asian dishes, poultry, veal, and refined dishes with white asparagus.

Domaine Weinbach, also known as Clos des Capucins, is not only one of the best Alsace domains, the refined and concentrated white wines are considered to be among the best in the world. The winery, which takes its name from the stream that flows through the vineyards on the spot, is located between the villages of Kaysersberg and Kientzheim and has a history that goes back a long way. In 860, the Abbey d'Etival obtained through a donation land that now belongs to the current vineyards of Domaine Weinbach.

A wall was built around a part of this plot in the early seventeenth century by Capuchin monks. This 5 hectare vineyard is the still existing Clos des Capucins. After the French Revolution, the vineyards and monastery were expropriated and sold by the state. Ultimately, it was the Faller brothers, two tanners from nearby Kaysersberg, who bought and refurbished the dilapidated abbey and its Clos des Capucins in 1898. Théo Faller continued the work of his father and uncle with great energy. He bought parts of surrounding Grand Cru vineyards such as Furstentumen, Schlossberg, Mambourg and Marckrain and brought the wines of Domaine Weinbach to an unprecedented level. With the third generation, the wines got even more refinement and depth, because from 1988 they first switched to organic viticulture and then in 2005 the choice was made to do the 28 hectares of vineyards and winemaking entirely according to biodynamic principles. The result is amazing; the white wines now have an unprecedented minerality, finesse and concentration. It is the result of natural preparations, acting according to the position of the moon and stars, drastic pruning at an early stage, hand picking grapes with optimal ripeness, with very low yields and preferably with the first effects of the noble rot and further a vinification with as little intervention as possible.
