In 1973, René Lamy and Thérèse Pillot, both born into real wine-growing families, married and started their domain in the Hameau de Morgeot on the edge of Chassagne-Montrachet. The PILLOT family traces its origins back to the municipality of Chassagne-Montrachet in 1595. The Lamy-Pillot winery is a family estate that operates on 20 hectares of vineyards, spread over 27 different appellations, mainly located in Chassagne-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin. Today the domain is owned by daughters Florence and Karine and their husbands. Florence and her husband Sebastien Caillat are now responsible for the vinification. Florence was educated in Beaune, while Sebastien Caillat was educated in Strasbourg and Dijon. In addition to their training, they both completed many internships, at home and abroad, before taking over the cellar in 1998.

The vines that Lamy-Pillot cultivates in this most legendary part of Burgundy, namely Le Montrachet Grand Cru, produce an average of 300 bottles per year. The vineyard was planted in 1950. The aging in barriques of this wine takes 18 months; 25% new wood. The Lamy-Pillot Le Montrachet Grand Cru is a very complex wine in which everything comes together: beautiful ripe fruit, white flowers and spices, notes of almond and brioche, beautiful acidity and a very long aftertaste. The Lamy Le Montrachet is packed in a beautiful wooden box.

ABOUT LE MONTRACHET GRAND CRU

The rarest and most expensive wines in the world are called “Montrachet Grand Cru.” Also called “Le Montrachet”, this Grand Cru vineyard is located at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy, France.

Location and Terroir

  • Location : The vineyard is located on the mid-slope of the Mont-Rachet hill, a location known for its ideal conditions for wine growing. The vineyards at this altitude benefit from an optimal microclimate, with the forest above the vineyard providing protection against wind and hail storms.
  • Area : Le Montrachet covers approximately 8 hectares (about 20 acres) and is divided between two villages: Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet. The border between these two villages divides Le Montrachet almost evenly.

Viticulture and Production

  • Grape variety : The vineyards are mainly planted with Chardonnay, the grape variety responsible for some of the most prestigious white wines in the world.
  • Soil : The soil composition is a mix of limestone and clay, which contributes to the minerality and complexity of the wines. The mid-slope location ensures good drainage, which is essential for the health of the vines and the quality of the grapes.

Characteristics of Montrachet Wines

  • Aromas : Wines from Le Montrachet often have a complex aroma profile with notes of ripe white fruit such as pears and apples, citrus fruits, white flowers and mineral nuances. As they age, they develop secondary aromas of honey, nuts and sometimes a hint of butter or truffle.
  • Taste : The taste is full and rich, with a perfect balance between acidity and fruitiness. The texture is often silky and creamy, with a long, refined finish.
  • Aging Potential : Montrachet wines have excellent aging potential and can easily age for decades, becoming increasingly complex and layered.

Appreciation and Exclusivity

  • Price and Rarity : Montrachet Grand Cru wines are among the most expensive and sought after in the world. Their rarity, combined with exceptional quality, makes these wines highly sought after among collectors and connoisseurs.
  • Producers : Some of the most prestigious wineries produce Montrachet wines, including Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leflaive and Lamy-Pillot.

In 1973, René Lamy and Thérèse Pillot, both born into real wine-growing families, married and started their domain in the Hameau de Morgeot on the outskirts of Chassagne-Montrachet. The PILLOT family traces its origins back to the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet in 1595. The Lamy-Pillot wine estate is a family estate that works on 17 hectares of vineyards, spread over 27 different appellations, mainly located in Chassagne-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin.

Today the domain is owned by daughters Florence and Karine and their husbands. Florence and her husband Sebastien Caillat are now responsible for the vinification. Florence was educated in Beaune, while Sebastien Caillat was educated in Strasbourg and Dijon. In addition to the training, they both completed many internships, at home and abroad, before taking over the cellar in 1998. Karine and her husband Daniel are responsible for sales and administration.

This real family domain has more than 20 hectares of vineyards and with this they make a wide range of both white and red wines. Lamy-Pillot wines are characterized by being very rich wines with a luscious texture. In the nose floral tones, ripe fruit and a refined touch of wood. The same aromas are reflected in the taste. The fine acidity gives the whole extra complexity. The wines of Domaine Lamy-Pillot now also belong to the very scarce Bourgognes with high ratings from the international wine press year-in-year-out.
