Description
In 1983, Denis Bachelet took over the management of his father's estate, which covered only 4 hectares. All vineyards are located in or around Gevrey-Chambertin and are mainly planted with old to very old vines. Almost all the work in the vineyard is carried out by Bachelet and his son. The cellar, barely larger than an average living room, is located under an old barn, on a side street off the main road in Gevrey. There is no reference to the estate on the facade; only a piece of weathered paper reveals that one of the most famous estates in Burgundy is located here.
Like many other large estates, Bachelet is convinced that the work in the vineyard determines 90% of the quality of the end product. The old vines, located on very old plots, are carefully pruned and cared for with great dedication. After arrival in the cellar, the wines undergo a short cold maceration, after which they undergo alcoholic fermentation. The wines are then aged for approximately 18 months in wooden barrels, of which approximately 30 to 50 percent are renewed annually, before being bottled unfiltered. Bachelet's style can be described as particularly intense, elegant and refined, with an almost feminine touch. After harvest, this beautiful wine matures for another 16 - 18 months in oak barriques, of which 50 - 80% are new. There is no filtering.

Bachelet's 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes has turned out beautifully in bottle. Soaring from the glass with aromas of cherries and raspberries mingled with sweet spices, licorice, rose petals and orange rind, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with terrific concentration, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. As readers will remember, this cuvée incorporates the domaine's holdings in Les Evocelles this year.
Long-time Bachelet fans will know that the two greatest vintages of Denis's career are 1999 and 2002. So, when those are the two years he cites as comparable in quality to his 2020 portfolio, one knows one is likely to find oneself in the presence of greatness. Yields, alas, were punishingly low, the suffering vines producing only five barrels of Charmes-Chambertin (eight was the average in more abundant years), and in Les Evocelles there were so few grapes that Bachelet opted to blend them into his Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes. But the resulting wines are magical, displaying vintage-typical saturation of color and intensity of flavor, allied with rather rarer structural finesse and textural sensuality. They won't be easy to find, but they will be worth a special effort to track down.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes contains what fruit was eked out from Evocelles this year. It has a clean, precise bouquet of black cherries, iodine, violet and light sous-bois aromas that soar from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a granular texture, impressive weight and disarming elegance and harmony on the finish. Try finding a better Village Cru than this in 2019... you won’t.

Denis Bachelet was the only visit rescued from my cancelled last week of tasting. I had to forego my baguette for lunch, but the wines were worth the sacrifice. Covid aside, the pandemic is not the only challenge that Bachelet has faced in recent months. “The summer dryness means that we are 40% down in terms of quantity,” a rueful Bachelet told me as we descended down the precariously steep steps to the barrel cellar. “There have been three consecutive dry seasons and it is beginning to affect the vines. There is just no water. In 2020 it was even less. I started picking on 14 September.” What can I say that I have not written before? From the entry Côte de Nuits-Villages up to the Charmes-Chambertin, all the 2019s bare the hallmarks of Bachelet’s style: pure red fruit aromas, stunning delineation, machine-tooled precision and bewitching grace on their finishes. The only downside is that the shortfall means there is no Les Evocelles this year.

Denis Bachelet took over the nearly 4 hectare 'large' domain from his father in 1983. In the small domain there are still very old vines (30 years with the regional AOCs to 100 years with the Charmes Chambertin!). The natural yield of these very old vines is very low, but the perfectionist Denis Bachelet did not think that was good enough. By cutting very drastically and low, the maximum yield is reduced even further. Given the small size of the domain, the age of the vines, the perfectionist drive for the very best quality, it is no wonder that Denis Bachelet wines have become highly sought-after cult articles worldwide.
