Description
The Petrus has retained its opaque purple-black color after bottling, heralding the seemingly frozen glacial pace at which this wine progresses. It opens very reluctantly, requires a lot of air with powerful rolling and after some hours this giant of a wine wakes up. As it finally unfolds, it slowly transforms into a powerful, fantastically clean nose of preserved plums, blackberry preserves and blueberry compote, followed by nuances of molten licorice, dark chocolate, black truffles, iron ore and, later still, floral notes of lilac and rose oil. On the palate the wine is tight, muscular with many, many layers of perfectly ripe black and blue fruit, exotic spices and earthy notes for which words simply fail. It will take a good 8-10 years to get going, then it is very likely to outlive us all, but you should be sure to drink these before you go.
This Petrus also comes directly from the Chateau. We always buy all our wines from the importers or chateaus so that authenticity can be checked and that we are sure that these wines are always stored in good conditions .

The 2019 Pétrus is a powerful, heady wine, bursting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, cassis, violets, spices, licorice and kirsch. Full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with an ample core of fruit, lively acids and powdery tannins that assert themselves on the liqueured finish, it's a ripe, high-octane Petrus that reflects the influence of a dry, warm growing season on what is essentially a single cépage (Merlot) and a single soil type (clay).
Winemaker Olivier Berrouet, following in his father's footsteps, continues to pursue a very classical, elegant style at Pétrus, a site naturally inclined to produce Pomerol's most muscular wine. He considers timing the date of harvest to be of the essence in avoiding excess; extraction is gentle, with daily pump-overs performed by hand during two or at most three weeks of maceration; and the modest 50% of new oak barrels employed at this address (from Taransaud, Darnajou, Séguin Moreau and Demptos) are steamed and then soaked with water for 15 days before filling to minimize their impact. So, I suspect that the 2019 vintage's power and structure arrived against his best intentions. Certainly, with essentially only one cépage (Merlot) and one soil type (blue clay) and a surface area of only just over 11 hectares, Berrouet doesn't have many options when a warm, dry vintage comes along. Power, rather than opulence, is the order of the day chez Pétrus this year, and while the 2019 is a prodigious wine, it will require notable patience of anyone wishing to see it at full maturity.

Château Pétrus is owned by the Moueix family and is located in Pomerol (Bordeaux). Château Pétrus makes the most famous merlot wine in the world! The vineyard with its 11.5 hectares is small but fine, and is planted with 95% merlot and 5% cabernet franc vines with an average age of 45 years. The soil consists of ferrous clay.
The Moueix family also owns Château La Fleur-Pétrus, Lagrange, Trotanoy, Hosanna (all Pomerol) and Château Magdeleine (Saint-Émilion). The grape pickers from all these domains jointly wait for the most favorable weather conditions, after which they all go to the Château Petrus vineyard and harvest within 1 to 2 days. The average annual production is only 2,500 boxes of 12 bottles - actually too little for the demand for these wines. The wines of Pétrus are among the most expensive, and also among the richest and most luxurious wines of Bordeaux. The fantastic taste experience is derived from the terroir, the excellent grape and the magnificent care by the team of Château Pétrus.
