Description
The Arômes de Pavie is the 2nd wine of Chateau Pavie and is a blend of 65% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, Beautiful aromas of blackberries, blue fruit, dark chocolate and black truffle that continue into a full bodied wine in the mouth with the character of crushed stone, fruit and black olives. Layered with firm tannins and serious aromas.
About the winery Château Pav ie
The vineyard of Château Pavie is 42 hectares. It is a large entity, but contains different terroirs, each with its own microclimate. Château Pavie is often one of the last wineries to complete the harvest. They work responsibly: 70% of the vineyard is now treated organically, they aim for 100%. Today, Gerard Perse is the man in charge. A self-made man and millionaire from Paris. The son of a painter, he took over a small grocery store in a suburb in 1976 and then achieved enormous success with franchise supermarkets for Champion (Carrefour). Until he only wanted to do wine. In 1998, after having bought a few other wineries, he bought Château Pavie. In the region, he is seen as a renouncer of Saint-Émilion wines because of the techniques he used, such as the early cutting of unripe bunches of grapes to limit production and increase quality. Considered an unheard-of waste at the time, today almost everyone does it. The success of his wines has improved his reputation a lot. Not only Parker, but also other international wine critics give the highest scores. And wine with a story.

The 2019 Arômes de Pavie is a blend of 65% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested from the 3rd of October to the 10th of October. The yields this year were 35 hectoliters per hectare, and the alcohol came in at 14.67%, while the pH was 3.46 (remarkably low!). Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes charging out of the glass with energetic notes of freshly crushed blackberries, boysenberries and red and black plums with fragrant touches of garrigue, violets, star anise and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is completely coated with black, blue and red fruits, featuring velvety tannins and an invigorating undercurrent of freshness, finishing long and perfumed.

Such beautiful quality of tannins in this with dense, layered fruit. It’s full-bodied with black fruit, wet earth and smoke. Some meat, too. Muscular, yet agile.

The 2019 Arômes de Pavie is a charming, inviting second wine to drink now and over the next decade. Crushed rose petal, sweet red berry fruit, mocha, dried flowers and blood orange are all nicely delineated. Like all the Perse 2019s, the Arômes is a bit nervous in feel.

The 2019 Arômes de Pavie retains the attractiveness that I found out of barrel, offering blackberry and bilberry scents that are quite low-key for this château. The palate is well balanced with lightly spiced red fruit, salted licorice and a slightly grainier finish than the silky one I encountered before. This is a thoroughly decent Deuxième Vin and it should give a decade of drinking pleasure.

The 2019 Arômes de Pavie is a very pleasing, inviting second wine. Red fruit, dried flowers, espresso, menthol and spice all meld together in an open-knit pliant wine with terrific depth and plenty of character. The 2019 will drink beautifully pretty much upon release.Henrique Da Costa, Gérard Perse's son-in-law, explained that while 2019 was hot and dry, conditions were not extremely hot. Cool temperatures in the evenings provided respite from the daytime heat, while water reserves in the soils from the wet spring allowed the vines to avoid stress. As for the wines, they are superb across the board. Most of the attention will naturally center on Pavie, but the entire range is terrific.

The 2019 Arômes de Pavie has an attractive bouquet, well-defined, with blackberry, bilberry and incense notes, the new oak neatly enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe tannins, pure blackcurrant mixed with blueberry and a touch of salted liquorice, sleek and silky smooth. This is a very well-crafted second label from Pavie, the best that I have tasted.
