Persoonlijke gegevens
This Spanish top wine is produced by winery Teso La Monja, an exclusive winery, one of the beautiful wineries of Hermanos Eguren.
The Alabaster is now the full successor of the Termanthia (The Numanthia and Termanthia vineyard sold the EGUREN family in 2007 to Luis Vutton, Hennesy Moet & Chandon - LVMH and started a new project in the same year: Bodegas Teso la Monja). The EGUREN family consistently continues its tradition of care and quality. The grapes are picked exclusively by hand and collected in small boxes to avoid damage. The yield is only 9hl/ha, so extremely low. The wine is aged for 18 months in new French oak. Harvested exclusively from vines with an average age of 100 years from the pre-phylloxera period, so still original vines / ungrafted vines (own rooted Vitis vinifera). The Alabster is a full aromatic wine. Plums, blackcurrants, cherries, minerals, a hint of mocha and beautiful tannins and a grand finale. This wine has enormous potential.
Unique version in a 0.375 ltr bottle - only a handful of bottles are made.

I tasted the 2017 Alabaster next to the 2016, two wines from the same plots and same vinification and aging in very different years. This 2017 is not heady and ripe, as would correspond with a warm, dry and very early harvest. It should also be understandably oaky after 18 months in brand-new French oak barrels. Surprisingly enough, it's terribly aromatic, expressive and floral, jumping out of the glass, with an extrovert personality, with a lactic touch and some notes of licorice, with better-integrated oak and more freshness than the 2016. The oak is less evident (they have changed the toast of the barrels, but they still use 100% new oak) and more integrated. This is still a modern and generously oaked Tempranillo, but in the overall context, it's the least oaky of all their wines I tasted this time. 4,000 bottles.
Teso la Monja is the second project created by the Eguren family of Rioja after they sold Numanthia to LVMH. They now produce 300,000 bottles split into five different labels. I tasted mostly 2016s and 2017s, two very different vintages. There was no frost in 2017, which was warm and dry and one of the earliest harvests on record. But the wines are incredibly fresh and balanced, I'm tempted to say fresher than the 2016s... Analytically they have lower alcohol and higher acidity. We shall see...

Tasting Note
Rich and dense, this big red delivers currant, blackberry and kirsch flavors, with cocoa, anise and mineral notes. The muscular tannins are well-integrated, softened by balsamic acidity. Powerful, in the modern style. Best from 2021 through 2036. 333 cases made, 20 cases imported. — TM

The Spanish winery Teso La Monja is located in the Toro. The winery heralds a new era for the Eguren family in DO Toro, a land from which she fell in love with the capacity of the old pre-phylloxera vines. Teso La Monja was founded in 2007. Wines that bring the potential of the Tinta de Toro with elegance, finesse and freshness, shared by all wines of the Eguren family attributes. The Almirez, Victorino and also the great Romanico (unprecedented good value for money in our opinion) are invariably 90+ Parker and Penin wines. Not surprising knowing that the Eguren family is also behind the Alabaster cult wine.
The Teso La Monja winery is located on north-facing loam soils with gravel on the surface, providing longer vegetative cycles for achieving balanced, powerful yet elegant wines that convey the maximum potential of soil minerality.
