2018 Stift Göttweig Riesling Ried Silberbichl 1ÖTW

Weingut Stift Göttweig is known as one of the oldest wineries in Austria. As a Benedictine abbey, Stift Göttweig was founded in the year 1083 by Altmann van Passau (also known as Saint Altmann). Since that time, the abbey has always played an important role in the development of wine production in the Wachau Valley. Stift Göttweig is located among the rolling countryside on the south bank of the Danube opposite the town of Krems at 449 meters above sea level. Because of this location and the abbey, the winery is also called the Austrian Montecassino. The Benedictines were responsible for the administration and management until 1988, after which the property was rented out until 2005. Since 2006, winegrower Fritz Miesbauer and his team have been reliving history on the Stift Göttweig estate.

The Silberbichl where the riesling grows in front of the Stift Göttweig Riesling Ried Silberbichl is a wide terrace step above the Danube meadow. The soil consists of old Danube gravel, weathered rocks covered with loess. The term "Silber" (in Dutch silver) probably originated because of the presence of mica in the soil which gives a silvery shine to the large pieces that can be found in the vineyard. "Bichl" is a variation of "Bühel" (hill). The cru Silberbichl is oriented to the southeast. Because of this special soil, 6.34 hectares have been planted with Riesling in this vineyard.

After the grapes are harvested in October, the grapes are destemmed after which a strict selection takes place to only use the very best grapes for this wine. Then follows the maceration of 6 hours, after 7 months contact with its fine lees in stainless steel tanks, the wine is bottled.

The Stift Göttweig Riesling Ried Silberbichl Kremstal DAC Reserve, 1ÖTW (Erste Lage) displays fruity aromas of white peach, pear and fresh citrus fruits in the nose. intense and luscious in the mouth. Mineral, lemon, green apple and stone fruit followed by a structured and long finish that leaves you wanting more.
