Description
Pujanza belongs to the modern style Rioja's and also have the great advantage that the vineyards are high (the Pujanza Norte comes from one of the highest vineyards in the Rioja). This gives the wine the typical Rioja, but with a lot of elegance and freshness. The top model and flagship of Bodegas Pujanza. The wine comes from the Cisma vineyard which is located at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria at an altitude of 600 meters. The vines are more than 100 years old (pre-phylloxera and ungrafted) and only 0.8 hectares in size. As you may know, after the grape disease in the early 1900s, almost all vines were destroyed and all new plantings were grafted onto American vines that are resistant. 99% of all vineyards are based on grapes grafted onto the American vine but there are still a number of authentic, very small vineyards that still have the unique original vines that have not been grafted and the Cisma is one of these rare examples.
The Cisma is now among the international top and has acquired cult status (especially since there are only a very limited number of bottles of this top wine). The wine has matured for 24 months in French oak barrels and then had a bottle maturation of over a year. This is a very complex wine. In the glass, the wine has a beautiful ruby red color. It has an intense nose with seductive aromas of red and black berries, with fine roasted notes, soft fresh herbs, leather, truffle, liquorice and beautiful mineral notes (pencil point). Intense, powerful with an impressive attack with flavors of candied fruit. In the mouth, the attack is very refined with silky tannins and beautifully refreshing acidity. Perfectly balanced with a very beautiful structure with a persistent and long finish. Clearly one of the greatest Riojas that exists. Only 1070 bottles of this unique wine have been made. All bottles are numbered.

The last time I sampled the range here, I tasted the unfinished 2014 Cisma before it was bottled because it's a wine that is not produced every vintage and they didn't produce it in 2013. Thus, I was looking forward to seeing the finished wine and, even better, seeing it next to the 2015. It's sourced from the Finca La Valcabada, a 0.8-hectare vineyard that was planted with Tempranillo vines in 1920. The soils are deeper and rich in clay, and it's located at 600 meters altitude. In this case, the destemmed grapes fermented in a 1,700-kilo oak vat with indigenous yeasts and then matured in French oak barrels for some 16 months. When the wine was waiting to be bottled, it was showing some influence from the élevage. Now it feels quite powerful and ripe (it's 15% alcohol). This feels like a great vintage for Cisma, with the stuffing to develop nicely in bottle. 1,110 bottles were filled in September 2016.
There is a new white from Pujanza, Anteportalatina, which is the same wine as the Añadas Frías, from the same vineyard that names it but from riper vintages. Most reds were from 2015, a warm and ripe vintage (all wines are 15% alcohol) when they did soft extractions to avoid heavy wines. It's a short and very healthy crop. The wines are gentle, perfumed, balanced and powerful.
As for 2017, their vineyards didn't suffer any frost, so yields were high and they got a very healthy crop, very unusual for the region.
