Description
The Monte Olmi is made with Corvina (30%), Corvinone (30%), Rondinella (30%), Molinara, Rossignola, Oseleta, Negrara, Dindarella, Croatina and forselina (10%) and has been raised for 24-36 months in barrels of Slovenian oak. The vineyard, 2.5 hectares in size, is 20 years old and bears the name Monte Olmi. It is located at Pedemonte di Valpolicella, in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico area. The Riserva is only made in the best years such as 2017.
The grapes are picked by hand at the end of September/beginning of October. The grapes are then dried, under controlled temperature and humidity, for a period of about 4 months. This causes the grapes to lose about 30 to 40% of their weight. The grapes are then gently pressed and the fermentation process is initiated. This fermentation takes place at a low temperature of about 15ºC and lasts about 2 months. The wine continues to mature in Slovenian oak barriques for a period of 2-3 years. After the wine has been bottled, the bottles are placed in the estate's cellars for further maturation for about 6 months before they are sold.
The Tedeschi Capitel Monte Olmi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva has a beautiful intense ruby red wine with hints of cherries, raspberries, currants and Slovenian oak. The taste is full and robust, with a good structure and confirms the scents. The aftertaste is long. This wine has had three red glasses in the Gambero Rosso for years, the highest rating!
The Tedeschi family is also seen as one of the godfathers of Amarone. The family has been producing wines since 1630. Renzo Tedeschi is a leading winemaker and one of the top internationally. Despite all this, it is still a real family business because the children Antoinette, Sabrina and Riccardo have now also joined the company.

2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Capitel Monte Olmi
RP 95
Drink Date:
2023 - 2042
One of the top wines in the Tedeschi portfolio, the 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Capitel Monte Olmi brings the intensity threshold up significantly in terms of fruit weight, power and alcohol (measured at 17% here). Dark fruit and plum are folded into candied fruit and cherry liqueur. The tannins are present, for sure, but expertly integrated to show no bitterness or astringency. In fact, the mouthfeel is probably the best and most unique feature of this wine. This is a 12,000-bottle release.

The Tedeschi 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Capitel Monte Olmi is brawnier, heavier and shows even more tarry spice than we saw in the 2013 vintage that I tasted at the same time. Aged in oak casks for four years, the blend is 30% Corvina, 30% Corvinone, 30% Rondinella and 10% complementary grapes from a 2.5-hectare vineyard with calcareous marl soils with streaks of yellow. This Riserva also shows more ripeness and ultimately more sweetness with cherry cola on the close. Production is 8,000 bottles.

Starts oaky on the nose, but as soon as you put the wine in your mouth, the glossy dried berries start to expand and soak up the oak flavors, giving a full-bodied, long and balanced finish. Though the aroma spectrum is not particularly complex at this stage, this is well structured and approachable even now. But Amarone fans will surely want to cellar this, as the huge aging potential is evident from the first sip. Drink now or hold for many a year.

Tedeschi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Capitel Monte Olmi Riserva 2016

This rich red nods at Amarone's traditional style with its dark focus and notes of stemmy herbs, iron and fresh earth, but the juicy core of black plum and cherry reduction flavors, the supple, chalky tannins and the overall integration and balance show the precision and pleasure of a modern approach. Long, lovely finish. Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Oseleta. Drink now through 2036. 700 cases made, 100 cases imported.

Tasting Note
Crushed pine and green olive notes lend a savory edge to this dense, tightly knit red, enmeshed with baked black currant and spice box flavors and racy minerality. Sleek and mouthwatering, this full-bodied example shows zesty spice and herb elements lingering on the grippy finish. Best from 2023 through 2033. 680 cases made, 200 cases imported. — AN

From: Valpolicella & Soave: The Times, They Are A Changin’ (Feb 2021)
The 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Capitel Monte Olmi takes things to another level. It coats the glass with a deep purple sheen while wafting up a dark and alluring bouquet of currants, raisins, black licorice and a lifting note of spiced citrus. There are depths of velvety texture here, offset by juicy acids and tart red fruits that saturate all they touch, leaving a complex coating of savory spices, minerals and fine tannins. This is structured, long, packed full of character, yet with a balance that will carry it for many years in the cellar. Wow.
