Description
The Grand Vin of Calon Ségur reflects its terroir. It is rare, authentic and moves the soul. In the most natural way, it reveals both great delicacy and exceptional intensity. All the magic of Calon is in the balance. The wine matures for 20 months in new oak barrels, with the tannins of the oak harmoniously integrating with the tannins of the grapes over time. The style is brought by a Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses its finesse without arrogance. Elegance can be found everywhere, in the purity of the wine's flavors, in the delicacy of its texture, while its depth and length are also exquisite. The wine's extraordinary ability to age in bottle for many years is another hallmark of the estate. The 1947, 1953 and 1982 vintages, for example, still show astonishing signs of youth.
The soil consists of a thick layer of gravel, deposited during the Quaternary period. Mainly clay subsoil from the Tertiary. On top of the gravel deposits there is also a fine layer of clay of lacustrine origin. The area consists of 55 ha (136 acres), of which 45 ha is planted
Medium to deep garnet purple in color, the 2017 Calon-Ségur has scents of warm plums, cassis, baked cherries and mulberries, earth, meat and cedarwood, with notes of lavender and olives. The palate is medium-bodied, elegant and intense with firm, fine-grained tannins and great length, ending with a mineral finish. This wine has matured for 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels. The blend consists of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

Graphite, wild herbs, bracken, violets and such spicy black and blue berries. The palate has impressive concentration, yet very supple, charming texture. Such impressively articulated tannin detail with very fine, long tannins and deeply integrated oak. This wine is so full of flavor and interest from start to finish. A blend of 76% cabernet sauvignon, 13% merlot, 9% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Needs three to four year to come around. Try in 2023 and onwards.

From: Vintage Seeks Home: Bordeaux 2017 In Bottle (Jan 2020)
The 2017 Calon-Ségur was bottled at the beginning of July 2019. This is clearly more intense and complex than the Marquis de Calon with blackberry, bilberry, traces of brine and discrete tobacco aromas. Classic in style with the Cabernet component clearly more expressive than previous vintages (a long-term policy as they reconfigure vineyard planting). The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and superb balance. There is a natural and effortless feel to this nascent Calon-Ségur, very focused with a "cool" and slightly reserved finish. Classy and, dare I say, it represents one of the few 2017s that may challenge its 2018 counterpart.
