Description
The Pujanza Norte comes from the 2.7 hectare El Norte vineyard at an altitude of 720 meters which consists of clay-limestone soils, the layers of limestone are only 50 cm below the surface. The winemaker puts flowers on the vineyard, so that the vines have to go deeper for water, which, among other things, gives the wine its special character. The vineyard is worked according to the rules of ecological viticulture and the grapes are harvested by hand. The Finca Norte vineyard is one of the highest vineyards in the Rioja and this makes this Norte Rioja an elegant and very balanced wine.
The Pujanza Norte has had 14 months of education in French oak. The Pujanza Norte has an intense nose with aromas of fresh red fruit, licorice, light vanilla notes, some smokiness, fresh herbs and a beautiful minerality. The wine shows complexity and freshness, and is very expressive. Also fine wood, spiciness and at the end a bit of the smell of ink. Full body, nice acidity, all nicely balanced with strong tannins. The Pujanza Norte is an elegant, powerful yet fresh wine and has beautiful refined tannins, which gives this wine a nice drinking window. A wonderfully exciting wine with unanimously high scores year-in-year-out
AWARDS: The Wine Advocate: 95 James Suckling: - Tim Atkin: 96 “Wine of the Year”
Carlos San Pedro and his team are constantly working to improve the performance of their vineyards. With an almost manic approach, they are always trying to improve the quality of the wines even further. Pujanza belongs to the new style of winemakers where the focus is on absolute top quality with an emphasis on the fruit. The fact that Penin and Parker without exception rate the wines of this house well above 90 points (so the absolute honorary division) says enough. The Norte and the Cisma are the top models of Pujanza. The white wines of Pujanza have been voted the best white wines in Spain by Decanter and Tim Atkins.

Issue 243 End of June 2019, The Wine Advocate
The first plot to be harvested in 2017 was the vineyard used for the 2017 Norte, as it ripened quite early, which is unusual, because it's the highest-altitude vineyard that is usually harvested last! It was bottled a little earlier. They used a little more new oak for the élevage, and there are some toasty aromas. It's a juicy and hedonistic red, and the early harvest made the alcohol level and other analytical data very similar to the 2016 I tasted next to it and also helped to balance the wine. It's still a baby, and the tannins are still quite noticeable. 11,000 bottles were filled in March 2019.
I tasted the 2016s and most of the 2017s from Pujanza, and I also paid a long overdue visit to their vineyards in Laguardia. 2016 was a cooler year, and 2017 was initially a warm and ripe vintage that has turned out much better than expected. There will be one more wine in 2016 from a plot just below the village of Laguardia, a slope with clay and stones that produced a more powerful, round and lush wine than the usual profile of the Pujanza wines.

Opaque ruby. Sexy, highly perfumed aromas of red and blue fruit preserves, vanilla, mocha and succulent flowers; a pipe tobacco flourish comes up with air. Sappy and broad on entry, then tighter in the midpalate, offering sweet cherry-vanilla, blueberry liqueur and spicecake flavors supported by a core of juicy acidity. Closes smooth, spicy and impressively long, with a touch of smokiness and fine-grained tannins adding final grip. All new French oak.
