Telmo Rodriguez's father built a great reputation with this bodega. Now two children Amaya and Telmo are 'in charge'. The vineyards of Bodegas Remelluri are located on the slopes of the Sierra de Tolono mountains and are therefore among the highest in the region. They face south and are protected from wind and frost by the mountains. The stony soil with layers of clay, the rainfall from the Atlantic coast and the lower temperatures than average in Rioja ensure a good phenolic ripening of tempranillo. Principles of organic farming have always been used to ensure that the wines remain true to this unique terroir.
Made from Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Moscatel, Viura, Malvasia. The wine has been matured for no less than 25 months on French oak. The wine has beautiful tones of ripened fruit such as cherries with chocolate, citrus peel accompanied by notes of vanilla and herbs. The wine has a lot of matter, concentration is high, many sweet accents, high acids, classic developed style, beautiful tight finish. In summary, this is a great powerful and full wine. The La Granja Gran Reserva is always only released after an average of 7-9 years of maturation (barrels and then in the bottle).
FACT: The wine is in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you come to pick up the wine you will also receive a nice discount. You will see your discount immediately when you choose Pick up in Checkout page. We are almost next to the Rijksweg with plenty of parking. Click here for our address.

The 2016 Granja Remelluri Gran Reserva was produced with a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and other grapes from their estate vineyards. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in open-top oak vats and matured in barrels of different origins and sizes for 26 to 28 months. It has 14% alcohol and a pH of 3.56. This is classical and modern Rioja, a little bit the description of what Remelluri is, combining the best of the Riojan tradition but up to date. There is more freshness here than in the majority of Gran Reserva, with fruit and plenty of tannin with a dusty texture. It should age in bottle. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2019.
I tasted Remelluri's wines as a tasting of Telmo Rodríguez's full portfolio, and I'm including them here again for completeness and context.

With Remelluri, Telmo Rodriguez is putting the Rioja on the map as a producer of original terroir wines. Long before the Rodriguez family settled on Remelluri, wine was already being made on the estate. As early as the 14th century, the monks here made wine from grapes from the surrounding vineyards. In 1967, the house came into the hands of Jaime Rodriguez, the father of pioneer and idiosyncratic winemaker Telmo Rodriguez. Jaime immediately makes radical changes. For example, he decided to only make wine from grapes from his own vineyards, which was exceptional in the Rioja at the time. We also strive to cultivate the vineyards as naturally as possible, in order to preserve the special character of the vineyards as much as possible. In 2010, the vineyards were officially certified organic under the leadership of Telmo.
In the early 1990s, Telmo joined the company. The story goes that his father wants to keep the production of the red wines for himself, so Telmo comes up with the beautiful white Remelluri Blanco. After several years of making wine in other parts of Spain, Telmo returned to Remelluri in 2010, where he took up winemaking together with his sister Amaya. As a great advocate of terroir wines, he has a clear opinion about the wines of the Rioja. Because winemakers often buy most of the grapes from grape growers, they have lost the connection with the vineyards and the terroir, he believes. In addition, the low prices of the grapes have caused winegrowers to neglect or even grub up the more challenging vineyards, often the older, high-altitude plots. With the wines of Remelluri, Telmo wants to show that the Rioja has many different terroirs that can be beautifully expressed in the wines.
