Screaming Eagle Winery
Founded in the early 1990s in Oakville, Napa Valley, Screaming Eagle is among the world's most exclusive wineries. The estate is known for its extremely low production, meticulous vineyard selection, and a style focused on finesse and balance rather than pure power. Both in the vineyard and in the cellar, the winery works with the utmost precision, aiming to create wines that combine texture, aromatic complexity, and long aging.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
Second Flight hails from Oakville, located in the heart of Napa Valley. This area benefits from cooling morning mist from San Pablo Bay, followed by warm afternoons. These conditions allow for a long growing season and gradual ripening. The 2014 vintage was relatively balanced, retaining freshness and a distinct aromatic precision.
Second Flight within the domain
Second Flight is Screaming Eagle's Merlot-focused wine and represents the estate's own interpretation, distinct from The Flight and the iconic main wine. In 2014, the style is remarkably refined and elegant, with a clear focus on freshness, tension, and floral expression. This year, the wine is closer to Screaming Eagle's own style than ever before, with a more precise and aromatic approach to Merlot.
Vineyards
The grapes are sourced from select parcels within Screaming Eagle's vineyards in Oakville. The soils consist of well-draining alluvial deposits with gravel and stones, resulting in low yields and concentrated fruit. This combination contributes to the wine's distinctive structure and mineral tension.
Grape varieties and composition
The blend consists of 57 percent Merlot and 43 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, with no Cabernet Franc. Merlot provides texture, floral aromas, and elegance, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure, tension, and length. The composition focuses on balance and precision, with a fresh and refined style.
Harvest
The harvest took place under controlled conditions, with careful timing to preserve freshness and aromatic clarity. Each grape variety was harvested separately at the moment of optimal ripeness, contributing to the precision of the final blend.
Vinification
Vinification was carried out with an emphasis on gentle extraction to preserve the very fine-grained tannin structure. Fermentation and maceration were carried out component by component, allowing for maximum control over texture and aroma. This approach results in a wine with tension and refinement, without excessive extraction.
Maturation
The wine was aged in oak barrels with a carefully balanced use of new wood. This aging enhances the structure and adds complexity, while preserving aromatic purity. The style is focused on long bottle aging and gradual development.
Color, smell and taste
The color is deep purple-black. The aroma reveals notes of blueberries and blackberries, complemented by nuances of cassis, truffle, bay leaf, rosehip, and subtle earthy notes. On the palate, the wine is energetic and fresh, with a medium to full body and very firm yet remarkably fine tannins. The finish is long and mineral-driven, with a precise and tense finale.
Development and drinking window
Second Flight 2014 currently appears closed and structured, but it clearly has aging potential. Further bottle aging will soften the tannins and enhance its aromatic complexity. Since this wine is over 15 years old, wine is a natural product and aging can vary from bottle to bottle. The drinking window runs from approximately 2021 to 2042.
Summary of professional reviews
Lisa Perrotti-Brown awarded this wine 96 points, praising its freshness, elegance, and mineral tension, with very fine-grained tannins and a refined Merlot expression. Other professional reviews place the wine at around 97 points, highlighting its balance, energy, and long finish. The 2014 Second Flight is considered a particularly precise and elegant interpretation within the estate.

Very deep purple-black, the 2014 Second Flight (composed of 57% Merlot and 43% Cabernet Sauvignon with no Cabernet Franc) is a little closed at this youthful stage, offering glimpses of blueberry compote, blackberry pie and cassis notions with touches of garrigue, bay leaves, black truffles, rose hips and underbrush plus a hint of wood smoke. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers wonderful freshness, with very firm, very finely grained tannins and layers of vibrant black fruits, finishing on a profound minerally note. With this vintage, we can see something of a stylistic departure, offering an expression of Merlot that is bright, refreshing, elegant and perfumed, and it is perhaps more similar to Screaming Eagle in terms of style than it has ever been. Beautiful!

Intense blackberry and blueberry aromas with hints of fresh mushrooms. Black truffles, too. Full-bodied, tight and chewy with polished and velvety tannins. Long and muscular finish. Energetic. December 2016 availability. Needs four to five years to soften but it's impressive now.

Screaming Eagle is an American winery located in Oakville, north of the city of Napa in the Napa Valley (California). It is especially famous for its very rare, limited production Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
History of Screaming Eagle
This winery was founded in 1986 by Jean Phillips, who sold grapes to several Napa Valley wineries. She purchased the 57-acre Oakville vineyard in 1986, which was planted with a mix of varieties, most of which were sold to various Napa wineries, except for 80 vines of Cabernet Sauvignon. For this one acre of Cabernet, Philips solicited the opinions of Robert Mondavi Winery employees on the commercial potential of its wine before hiring Richard Peterson as a consultant, and then met with Peterson's daughter, Heidi Peterson Barrett, who became Screaming Eagle's first winemaker. The entire vineyard was replanted in 1995 with three grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 1992 vintage, released in 1995, through a combination of very low production numbers and very positive reviews, made Screaming Eagle one of the most celebrated and expensive wines in the Napa. In 1992, she released the first vintage Screaming Eagle wine. On March 17, 2006, the estate was sold to Stan Kroenke and Charles Banks. The new owners had exciting plans to keep the vineyard small, but raise the bar in terms of quality. In April 2009, Charles Banks left Screaming Eagle, leaving Stan Kroenke as the sole owner.
Production of Screaming Eagle
Screaming Eagle's production is rare, with a strong focus on quality. The vineyard is relatively small and the team takes a practical and precise approach to every aspect of winemaking. The vineyards extend over 48.21 acres (19.51 ha), planted with the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Sauvignon blanc. The vineyards are managed by David Abreu Vineyard Management and cared for by Jorge Delgado and his team. In 2006, 34 hectares were replanted. Annual production ranges from 400 to 750 cases (between 5,000 and 9,000 bottles of 750 ml). The winemakers are Nick Gislason, Robert Black and Michel Rolland. Screaming Eagle is known for its extremely limited production, typically producing only a few hundred cases of wine per year. This limited availability has contributed to its reputation as one of the most exclusive and sought-after wineries in the world. This producer's Cabernet Sauvignon are highly praised for their exceptional quality, complexity and depth. Their reviews from wine critics are almost always excellent and the wines are considered among the finest wines produced in Napa Valley. The rarity and quality of Screaming Eagle wines make them among the most expensive in the world. They are often sold through allocation to a select group of customers, and prices on the secondary market can be exorbitantly high.
