Description
The 2013 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche Monopole Grand Cru is one of the most prestigious and coveted wines in the world. La Tâche is a monopole, meaning that the vineyard is wholly owned by the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC), and it is considered one of the crown jewels of Burgundy. La Tâche is a grand cru vineyard in the Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, located in the commune of Vosne-Romanée.
The 2013 vintage presented significant challenges: The season began with a cold and wet spring, which led to late flowering and lower yields. The summer brought warmer weather, but heavy rains in September increased the risk of disease. Strict selection in the vineyard was necessary, so that only the best grapes were used. The total production was therefore very small. The grapes that were harvested had a good balance between sugar and acidity, resulting in wines with elegance and freshness. The scarcity and excellent quality make 2012 unique and highly sought after.

Colour: Bright ruby red, with an intense shine typical of La Tâche.
Nose: Aromatic and refined, with scents of ripe red berries, cherries, raspberries, and floral notes such as roses and violets. In addition, there are complex nuances of spices, earthy notes, and a hint of truffle.
Taste: The wine offers a perfect balance between freshness and depth. The acidity is lively, and the tannins are firm but velvety. Flavors of red fruit, spices and a mineral undertone come together in a long, layered finish.
Storage potential:
This wine has enormous aging potential. Although it can be impressive when young, it will continue to develop in the bottle over the next 20 to 30 years (or more), developing more secondary and tertiary aromas such as earthy and smoky notes.

La Tâche, located in Vosne-Romanée, is a cru particularly appreciated by professionals and wine lovers for its consistency, continuity and compactness. This vineyard, which extends in the heights and depths of the Côte de Nuits, has a rich diversity of soil types. This may explain the complexity and power of its wine. La Tâche is one of the two Monopole of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The vineyard has had various owners over the years, including illustrious names such as Jean-Baptiste Le Goux de la Berchère in the 16th century and later the Liger-Belair family. Due to various circumstances, it was sold in 1933 to the owners of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
A major event in the history of the vineyard was the merger of La Tâche and the neighbouring Les Gaudichots, which was legally authorised by a court ruling in 1932. The vineyard is located between 250 and 300 metres above sea level and has a variety of soil types, varying in depth and composition. To combat erosion, measures have been taken, such as the construction of a concrete basin in 1985.

The 2013 La Tâche Grand Cru was picked from the afternoon of October 7 and over the next two days at 18 hectoliters per hectare. It has a heavenly nose with exquisite mineral-rich red cherry, wild strawberry, blood orange and subtle woodland, damp autumn leaf and moss aromas that are extraordinarily complex. It seems to gain vigor and intensity with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, a slightly suppler La Tâche compared to recent years, a wine with an athleticism. There is nothing wasted or superfluous here, a honed La Tâche that is all about tensile structure matched by perfect acidity and an incredibly complex, kaleidoscopic finish that seems so mercurial in the glass, initially offering red fruit then changing its mind and revealing darker and more tertiary notes. In a word: awesome. Production is 1,023 cases. Tasted February 2016.

The 2013 La Tâche Grand Cru is dazzling. Bright and nuanced, the 2013 sizzles with energy right out of the gate. The 2013 is just starting to open. Ideally, a few more years in the cellar would be helpful, but the 2013 is so inviting at this stage. This late-ripening year produced a La Tâche that bristles with tension.

Bright, dark red. Precise but discreet aromas of raspberry, noble herbs, smoky minerality and spices. Hugely rich and spherical in the mouth but also shows outstanding lift and saline soil complexity to the extremely concentrated flavors of raspberry, strawberry and flowers. Delivers a compelling combination of sweet and savory elements and finishes with noble, seamless tannins and great energy and spicy lift. An obvious knockout but much more reticent today than the Richebourg.

According to Bertrand de Villaine, the 2013s were seductive in barrel but are now very tight and closed. "It's not at all an immediate vintage," he told me in November. "The wines did not like being bottled and they have shut down quickly. But they are concentrated and dense, because we had only half of a normal crop." De Villaine compared them to the estate's 1949s, which he said took 20 years to mature. Potential alcohol levels were in the 12.5% to 13% range and no chaptalization was necessary. The team vinified with an average of about 60% whole clusters.

Pure silk on the palate, the 2013 La Tâche is a wine of texture above all else. Hints of rose petal, spice, mint and sweet red stone fruits are laced together in a fabric of nearly indescribable tactile finesse. Bright saline notes support an eternal finish laced with super-expressive floral and spice overtones. In 2013, La Tâche has it all. Along with the Romanée St.-Vivant, La Tâche is one of the clear stars in this range.

This year I tasted with both Aubert de Villaine and his nephew, Bertrand, who continues to take on a more visible role at the domaine. When discussing the 2013s, Aubert de Villaine draws parallels with 1978 and 1979, two years that were also quite late. Conditions in 2013 were challenging, as they were everywhere. In 2012, Spring was quite damp, but 2013 was even moreso, with total rainfall of 350mm versus 250mm the year before. Cold and rain drew out the flowering, a good two weeks behind in 2012 and five weeks in 2011, and also created quite a bit of shatter. Summer was much more favorable, reaching high temperatures in July and August, which allowed the ripening to catch up a bit. A bout of rain in late September caused a bit of last minute angst, along with an onset on botrytis, so the Chardonnay was picked on October 2, a little earlier than would have been the case otherwise. Pinot in Corton came in on October 3, but rain on October 5 and 6 caused the crews to take a break until the next day. The rest of the Pinot was picked in pretty rapid succession, culminating with the Échézeaux, which came in on October 12. Between shatter in the spring and severe sorting at harvest, production is down nearly 50%. As is typically the case, the 2013s were fermented with a high percentage of whole clusters. Bertrand de Villaine added that new oak has come down for the Corton and is now 50%, while all the other wines continue to see 100% new barrels.
